My 3yr old 5D works perfectly. My other 6mo old 5D has a problem only when my 15mm fisheye is attached. The mirror hits the base of this lens because it extends further into the camera body. I suppose the tolerances are very close in that area. It only happens on the 15mm so I'm not sending it in. All my other lenses work fine on both 5Ds. It makes me wonder if some mirrors have a slight interference that is not noticeable, and the constant bumping eventually causes it to dislodge?
I love the 5D and had bought a 30D as a backup to my original. After seeing the file quality difference I sold the 30D and bought a second 5D. I've been very happy with the camera.
The current understanding is that only the first run of 5D's had this problem (along with HPF's opening up) due to bad glue, then Canon fixed it. My 5D is one of the first of the second run, so I'm not very concerned, but it would be great to see those numbers, just to know for sure.
-And sorry about your trouble.
BTW - If Canon does repair your cameras (free or otherwise) make sure they also check or re-glue the HPF as well.
mine just fell off yesterday in the middle of IL (not so tropical, 60 degree day) I got an email back from canon sayingt hey can't tell me how much it will cost until I mail it to them (it is out of warranty and not only did the mirror come loose--it broke inside the camera so I am sure the sensor is a mess etc) I have ready forum posts of people saying it cost them 6-700$ to get repaired....if they tell me that after reading so much about this happening to so many people it is gonna be an all out fight, gloves off. this sucks.
I live in Hawaii, and today, while photographing my daughters soccer game, the mirror fell off. I am in the high tens of thousands of actuations and I had shot quite a bit for a project earlier in the day.
All of a sudden - no mas.
My wife asked why I wasn't freaking out. Well my 5D MKII comes Monday. And I have had nothing but positive experiences with Canon Hawaii. My expectation is that I will drop off the 5D to them Monday morning. Monday afternoon my new camera will arrive and I will obsess on that for about a week. Canon will call me and tell me to pick up my fixed/updated/cleaned 5d for no charge.
So no freak out. I was disappointed it happened, but I have ever confidence Canon will do the right thing.

The mirror problem you are referring to is most likely for those who use "exotic" glass, such as Zeiss, Leica, Olympus etc with adapters which can recess far enough into the body to hit the mirror. If you stick with standard EF lenses, or the exotics that are known to work you won't have any problems. I'm not sure it's even fair to call it a problem as the 5D wasn't designed for use with those lenses.
this actually made me laugh out loud.
do a search bud, exotic glass (haha)
mine fell out and Canon acknowledged the issue (fixed it free waaaaaay out of warrantee)
It was hilarious (well, actually very sad) that like most issues, Canon Reps first denied it was a problem a la "We've never heard of this before" and "Don't listen to forum rumors" and makes you sort of feel stupid...only to fall silent later on when Canon inc admits the problem
Canon knew this was problem over a year ago. I love the "hot, humid" garbage.
I had my mirror fall off in the Arctic taking pictures of polar bears. It cost a couple of hundred bucks to fix. Usual complete denial of liability on their part.
The "repair" just fell apart again, but magically they now admit they are completely to blame and will repair it free. Great. Meanwhile, I lose my bread and butter shooter for another week.
Reminds me of insurance companies who push back as a matter of policy. I'm hugely unimpressed. The Canon staff are told to deny they've seen similar problems if people ask, despite handling issues like this all day. It's just awful customer relations.
"Don't listen to forum rumors"?! What a pathetic thing to say. It's real, it happens regularly, they should just admit it, fix it and move on.
Ruy, I didn't follow the reference to the 1D3 (which I use a great deal)?
