The F/2.8 is not plastic............
What proof do you have of this? There was a similar thread a year or two ago where a 70-200mm 2.8 (IS I believe) took a similar fall, and broke in the same place. I tried to find the thread and the pictures, but I think there is also quite a bit of plastic inside the 2.8 version. Whenever a zoom is produced, they parts inside that allow for zooming are plastic. That way they can be very sturdy, and light.
As posted above, I approved Canon's estimate / quote on Monday. Fed Ex just left my office, and I have the lens back. They replaced the barrel section that was destroyed in the crash, as well as the silver metal lens mount. It has been tested, cleaned, and calibrated. The total costs including overnight shipping back to me were as promised ($173), and I have the lens in my hands as we speak. If all goes as planned and it works as well as it did before (which was approaching perfection), I'd say they did a fantastic job with this! Thanks Canon!!
