thank you very much for your "assistance". You don't have to hate telling me something I could see with a 400D and the 85L, too
The behaviour you describe - within DOF - is what I would expect from any camera, and therefore from a 1D-whatever in special perfection.
For no avail.
At least I have no paranoia. From what I read somewhere else, with firmware 1.1.3 there was an improvement for some of us... Lucky them...
Biggest problem - I shall not return the cam completely - IF it has correct focus, as someone else reported, the pics are stunning. Beautiful colors and contrast. Therefore I will fight a bit further...
1. people quit buying the camera.
2. a class action suit is filed state or fed
3. 1 & 2
I feel for all those that gambled, held them too long and lost. I just barely escaped myself. The money was put to good use with glass, laptop, software and studio stuff I need for the coming year. Good luck to all those undoly affected by this HOT MESS.
I'll look at it again when it's replacement is released
Jarvis,
Keep in mind though that there are a lot of happy MkIII owners and you could have been one, had you gambled . Typically, the happy MkIII owners are not that vocal as the dissatisfied owners. So, they appear to be in minority but who knows what is the actual ratio between the two
Mine seems to work fine although admittedly I had some OOF shots using AI Servo, which could be contributed to my own fault. I used mine for numerous BIF shots in Lodi and Bosque and I was happy with the results. After I installed FW 1.1.3, the performance is significantly better. I do not hesitate to take that camera on serious photography trips as I knew I could rely on it. I am not sure whether my experience is the exception or it is the norm. Let me assure you one thing though, my 1D MarkIII has been nailing the focus using the single shot mode each time, the OOF shots I had was using the AI Servo mode, as I mentioned earlier.
I tried the Dust-Off can with ruler with a similar result. The can was only 33 inches from the front of the lens (about 1/4 inch DOF). It is apparent some of the images are sharper than others, and it was related to the lens focus point prior to the AF. If the lens was racked towards infinity the images are tack sharp. If the lens was racked to near focus, the image is front focused very slightly. It would not be noticeable unless you had the sharper image to compare to. The shift is less than 1/8 inch and probably would be considered within spec by Canon.
I am sorry you are having so much trouble with the MKIII after the fix. I am in the cue to have mine repaired, but now I am concerned about the quality of the work. If this sub-mirror work is delicate in nature, could the Canon Techs be botching some of the cameras??
well, my setup was with about 2 meters in distance. I took another look into the EXIF and the - according to the author of Image-ExifTool "unreliable" - "Focus distance Upper" information show: 9 with 2.49 and the rest 2.50. They don't match in any with front/backfocus in the pics.
So far, so bad. Don't know what that means. The camera "thinks: I'm doing well and am reporting so" but actually does not provide correct driving of the lens-focus-motor...
I think it means your camera is not working correctly, and should be replaced or repaired. No way it should be that inconsistant
Was it this bad before the sub-mirror fix?
Richard K.
the answer is: "Yes". I was even very satisfied with AI-performance, as I had > 28°C and was in a bad traffic-jam the other day, took some useless pictures of cars coming towards me... No prob @all. Three 20-pics series with no obvious probs.
I want to take pictures. With my way of "looking". Not caring for AF and foo and bar... Next foto-contest on the way. Having fun with my hobby. And perhaps more
