I haven't kept up to date over the last week or so on this thread, but it seems there is a new firmware coming at some point soon, but no news about what RG reported? The be all and end all of 1D3 fixes?
They began telling people (VIPs) on February 1 and still no word on when it will get to anyone; kind of odd. But they claim to be able to "completely correct" the AF issues with the fix. I'll believe it when I see it but who knows? Maybe this is, indeed, the MOAF (mother of all fixes.)

Well just got mine back and opened it up and the paperwork stated:
All adjustments and corresponding testing have been completed to Canon Factory standards. Firmware was updated to the latest version.
And I got the extended 1 yr warranty.....The thing is the body has already had the fix & latest firmware and the extended warranty letter....So I don't think Canon even looked at it...All of my Cf settings are still there also.
Only reason I really sent it in is in One shot mode I was noticing a few instances where the focus wasn't in focus throughout the whole photo but not in all cases so I said what the heck send it in and see what they say....So basically they done the 1st fix all over again and gave me a new warranty??

Taking mine to UPS right now.. Headed to Irvine this time with a detailed account of the BS NN, VA did to mine and a copy of my email exchanges and HROW's message.
I am sure it'll come back crap again.. but whatever.. Might as well send it in now.. I am not going to use it like it is.

I'm trying to stay calm but it is very difficult. Got my 1DMkIII back from Irvine where it visited Canon for the third time. The first test shots had me saying oh no, not again but I kept my cool and did a micro-adjust which turned out to be +10 at about 20 feet with my 300mm F4. Things were looking up, or so I thought. Turned the camera at a street sign 100 feet away, and below you can see what I got.
1. The results are much worse than before the micro-adjustment but not up to a standard that could have taken those eagle pics.
2. Also note that if I drop the micro-adjust back to 0 that closer items go to hell. Longer distances are also noticeably worse without the M-A.
3. Of the three frames I took of the street sign from a tripod and within 30 secs of one another, all three have different degrees of out-of-focusness. Which is the same problem that I have been complaining about. IS is Off and the shutter speed is 1/640.
It gets better...
While I was outside testing my wife came back from a bike ride and I had her do a number of very, slow passes. We are talking REALLY easy stuff to shoot. Horribly results. Focus was all over the place. Occasionally on but then immediately lost. In focus rate never exceeded 20%. This is after the micro-adjust, on a tripod so the focus point is really steady on her face, IS is off.
I'll do some more testing tomorrow but I am so frustrated that I could scream. If my camera is any indication, Canon doesn't have the slightest idea how to fix these things.

Henry,
Sorry to hear about your experience . Canon should officially declare yours a definite "lemon" and either give you a new unit or give you your money back.

Funny that i could not find anything from SportsShooter.com forums but refers to Rob Galbraiths article of this whole topic...
Who are these "confirmers?" Link, please.
I don't know what's "funny" about it. I did a search several days after RG's announcement, and found several people who confirmed it (i.e. they themselves were present at one of the briefings). I don't have the time to go looking for them again, but I'm sure they are still there, though not by searching title of thread. Simply read every MkIII thread you run across starting with the most recent, and sooner or later you'll find one. The threads over there aren't very long, and there actually aren't very many MkIII threads (compared to here, at least).

I am also sickened to hear this Henry.
Ironically, when mine came back from NN, VA I had the same thing with my 300.. (albeit, the 2.8 version). M/A of +10 made it usable, but not what it should be. Severely Front Focused with all lenses. Didn't see your latest post until I returned from UPS...
What a PITA. Please let me know what they have to say this time...They need to give you a new one. If mine comes back again like that, I'll be BBB and everything else I can think of until I get a refund or a new one. 3 times is my limit...Especially, when they hosed it up to begin with.
Dang it.. Now I just have to sit tight and stew about it along with you..

They are telling me that I need to send in all of my lenses and that the camera is "well within spec for critical focus." I'll give them one more try at not being stupid and then it is war. here is the problem with their logic as I see it.
They aren't claiming that all 1DMkIII's need to have each and every lens calibrated specifically for that body (wouldn't sell many cameras if they had to admit that, would they?) I am sure every Canon rep out there would tell me that if I went to a store and bought a new 1DMkIII that I could use my existing Canon lenses and that they would work fine with that body. Thus by extension, if those lenses don't work with my body then there is something wrong with my body - not all of my lenses. Pretty simple isn't and its not an argument that their lawyers want to try to defend.
Let's go a step further because this is where things really fall apart for them. Say I get all of my lenses calibrated but then do something incredibly stupid, like buy a new Canon lens. Doing so means that I have to send my camera and lens to Canon for calibration which means that I'll be without both for 10-15 days. Will they give me a loaner? What if it is past my warranty period? Will they cover calibration for as long as I own my camera? Will they put that in writing? If I sell my camera, will they cover the cost of calibration to someone else because their lenses won't work with my camera any more than my lenses will? By their line of logic I can't borrow or rent lenses with any reasonable expectation that they will work with my body.
When you look at things like that it doesn't seem that their position that I need to send in all of my lenses is too reasonable, does it?
BTW... the street sign focus point is right at the top of the pole and on the first E.

Henry,
So sorry for your continuing struggles.
I think what they are trying to do is not to calibrate your lenses to your camera. At this point, when they are certain (or think they are certain) that the camera is within the specs the only other unknown is the state of your lenses. I think when they ask to send both the camera and the lenses they want to cover all the bases.

Hrow: I also am sorry for the trouble you are having. I have been sitting back and hoping for a fix. My trouble seems to be on the longer lenses. I have seen many soft shots like your street sign in my photographs with my 500 f4 lens. My 500 is in to canon right now to be calibrated so I can rule that out for sure. I just bought a used mark2 also and I'm going to do some shooting with that and see how I stand. It's going on almost a year now and my patience is about gone for good. We used to have a old commercial here on TV for a Highland appliance store and they use to show you bringing back a tv and some guy would throw it through there front window, I wonder if Canon has a nice big picture window out front

Why would lenses work fine on other bodies? That is my predicament. My lenses work fine on my 5D... Also worked fine on my Mark IIN, 2nd 5D and (2) 20D's. Along with a friends 5D. And to top it off, they worked fine with my Mark III UNTIL I HAD THEM REPLACE THE SUBMIRROR STOPPER! They screwed it up. Plain and simple.
Henry, your line of reasoning is spot on. BS if they have to calibrate the lenses to the body.
The Wrath of Andrew will be unleashed if I don't get back a perfect body. They need to call Sh$t Network (I mean Dish Network) if they want to find out how effective that Wrath can be...And it will most certainly cost them more than $4500. I can count easily $20k worth of sales I have given them from referrals in the past 6 months. That type of business will cease.
Sure I realize they don't care. But they'll start when people start doing this in mass.

Or so it seems to me
No, unfortunately they have said specifically that they need to calibrate my lenses to my camera and that they can do so much more accurately than can the micro-adjustment. They have never suggested that I have a lens problem per se nor do I think they would suggest that all of my lenses went down the tubes at exactly the same time - that being, right after they fixed the camera.

I think they need to start realizing that it is their customers who bring them a lot of their business and that it is a very bad thing to piss them off too badly. In terms of lost income, I have been waiting to order an 85L and an MP-E 65 and if things had worked out today I would have picked them up tomorrow because I need them instantly. That's not happening now and I can guarantee you Canon is never, ever going to see that $2500.
