Hmmmm, If there were an issue with the mount to sensor distance, you would think that would show up in One Shot with a 85f1.2 for example. My III has no problems in One Shot AF, only unexplained behavior in Servo AF.

My experience with the camera is the center focus point will be on the target, the first frame will be in focus, the second frame is focused 3 to 5 feet in front of the target and will be focused on the ground, the third and fourth will be completely out of focus, I mean nothing in the frame is focused, then all of a sudden I will get a couple of frames back in focus again before it goes out again. Pretty hard to do my job with a camera like this.

There´s a possibility to screw up algorithms of cameras "brains"
After all cameras nowadays are computers.
The image sensor is not involved in the AF process...that is the job of the AF sensor. If the image sensor was not mounted at the correct distance from the lens mount, everyone would consistently get out of focus shots in both one shot and servo mode, and in all lighting conditions.

I am in the same boat here as everyone else. My Mk3 is currently sitting at Irvine. Why is everyone trying to figure out what is wrong? We bought a (supposedly) high quality camera that is expected to last for years to come. Is anyone looking into a class action lawsuit?
I am furious

The only people that really win in a class action lawsuit are the lawyers, while everyone else would most likely get a discount on future Canon products. It does appear that Canon is working to resolve the problem, but If you're really that upset, I would just sell it when you get it back and move on.

First I will try to get a new one from them (that they suspiciously have fixed) If not, Nikon is looking really good to me right now.

I've been lurking on these posts for the past 35 odd pages... Y'know I subscribe to 4 or 5 of the top photo magazines and NEVER has there been a mention that the MkIII is anything but perfect... I don't (happily I guess) own a MkIII, but I might suggest that a saturation mailing campaign to the photo mags might have a motivational effect on Canon...then again maybe the magazines know about the issues but value advertising revenues above the truth. Just a musing...

There is no way you are going to get the amount you paid for the Mark III, back from Canon. So a person can either use it as is and wait for the repair, or if it is really that upsetting, sell it for a loss (which will happen whenever they sell it in the future anyway).

Thank you, that is my point. Everyone is trying to "fix" this and that on the camera. I've even seen posts saying "just don't shoot in the sun" or "do a micro adjustment"
I say WHY? It's just not right.

Nikon has some fine products. If they have a camera that will do what you need and you don't think Canon will come through with a fix, then I would seriously think about switching. If Canon doesn't fix the issue in this version of the Mark III, I'll be moving on to Nikon.

This last page makes me wonder how many people who threaten to sell their Canon gear and move to Nikon just because of problems with the 1D3 actually do so.... My feeling would be - not many!

Bingo!!!
Magazines don't make money from subscriptions or newstand sales - It's from their advertisers.

Most businesses calculate legal fees in determining their prices and often consider it part of doing business - some much more so than others.
Which begs the question, why did Canon change the price of the DIII just as they released it from the originally announced price?
Well, I'm pretty certain no one here knows for sure, but I have an idea that there are a few people here, that love a good conspiracy theory, that will have an answer

I truly have no clue what Canon is doing. I just know that we have always bought Canon for it's good name. I'm an at-home-mom who just happens to enjoy photography. Buying all this equipment and having this happen to me has left a bad taste. I just can't imagine what you pros are going through right now. I also don't run a business but I can tell you that this is no way to conduct one. If you want returning customers you wouldn't throw out a firmware update with the hopes that it shuts a few people up. When I got back my Mk3 and strapped on my 70-200 2.8 IS (my best lens IMO) my mouth dropped at the sight of the shots it was taking. I called Canon and the tech support guy said "We haven't heard of any problems at all" Riiight...
Lets hope they treat their customers right and clear this up the right way. That is either correct it, issue new cameras or our $$ back.
