I had 1Ds mkIII on backorder with Adorama. Past tense that is.
I'll give them a year to fix their too often defective 'pro' body. This ain't a firmware fix folks... I'm sure their engineers were aware this was coming and they were overruled by marketing dept. on the release of this not finished body.

I have an $1100 lens on a $4500 body sitting on $800+ of tripod and head using a cable release and still not breathing and it can't focus. Canon has already told me that they are going to want me to send all of my lenses to them despite the fact that my 20D hit 5 of 5 (not that a street sign is much of a challenge) with the same lens. Urghhhhhhhhh....
Don't do it, Henry. Get back on the phone with them, and get a supervisor. Offer to send them a ridiculous amount of proof (RAWs on DVD) that your lenses have worked consistently on other bodies, and that it's not reasonable to assume that they are--all of a sudden--miscalibrated. I realize that it's a 'canned answer' on the part of phone support, but it is possible to demonstrate that it's not your lenses without sending them all in. I think that we've jumped through enough hoops as loyal customers of Canon, and it's time for them to come to our aid, as they did in my case.

I'm not going to Jeff. If they have built a product line where each lens has to be professional calibrated to each body so that it achieves the same focus accuracy level as a P&S then perhaps it is time to give up. Their logic astounds me.
I have a lens that works fine on my back-up body.
They want to calibrate it so it works on my main body.
I get it back and but it will no longer work on my back-up body.
I guess the step after that is to send in my back-up body in so they can break it to match my dysfunctional main body so that the lens that was working but isn't does.

sadly enough I think there are enough of us here who are way too familiar with these sequences.
my 1D3 is in for the fix now, I guess have to wait and see....

Unsharpened JPG from RAW. No PP. Center focus point directly on the first E in Marlene.
Henry,
I am not even sure where the focusing plane is? Is that just blurry more like camera/lens movement, which is not the case since you had the setup on a tirpod or does it backfocus or frontfocus?
p.37 #8 · ['NEW Fix' UPDATE!] - MkIII AF still broken
Here's the whole scene. Very down and dirty because of the weather and it was the only 10 minutes that it wasn't raining. There is nothing in front of the sign and the tree is a good 50' behind it. As you can see, the center point is dead on the sign and I had focus confirmation. Nothing changed between shots. Neither the sign or the tree was very active today so they stayed put.

I would say it is front focusing, Even in front the N on the top sign, I had issues like this until I dialed in some + on all lenses.

Something else to throw in the mix. The sign was at least 100' away which gives me better than 6 feet of DOF at F4. You'd think after being assigned to a senior tech that he/she would be able to adjust it a little better than that, especially since this is the second trip in and they had a DVD with five different examples and sequences showing the same thing.

Henry,
You are blowing up a section, which could be a100% crop of the entire image and you didn't apply any PP. In addition, maybe Wade is right, your lens seems to be a little bit frontfocusing, it looks like it focussed on the O or R on the street sign "N Forest Drive". I am not sure about this. Could you possibly take a framefiling image of that street sign from the exact angle?

Honestly don't want to add fuel to the fire, but if you send a defective piece of equipment to be repaired and it is returned with the same problem or other new defects, you should expect a new replacement or a full refund - no questions asked. This is ridiculous.
It's bad enough that a product is released with obvious design flaw/defect, but to keep perpetuating it with shoddy service destroys any good will. These camera's should be getting white glove treatment to ensure their owners are fully satisfied with the quality of follow up service and regain a sense of security with the company after having purchased a bum product. Anything else will only fuel resentment and distrust.
Sorry for the soap box episode. I'm just amazed and impressed at your level of patience with these issues. How long has it been, 9-10 months?

AJ,
No questions about the deficiency in quite a few 1D MarkIII but the vast majority of the owners are happy with their camera after the fix. Mine has been excellent from day one, although it was listed as to be recalled. I know a lot of owners of this camera that are in the same boat as I am and they don't bother posting their positive experience anymore or posting on this thread, it is getting old... and too much noise, like your post. Of course, had mine been not working properly, I would be very vocal, too. Sorry, I don't buy that design flaw crap . Yes, a few still are not too happy after the fix. Jeff did get a new one, not because of the AF but focus shift. Yes, his was lemon. And Henry's situation...
Yes, you are adding fuel to the fire , actually by quite a bit. Does it give you a warm feeling and satisfaction if Canon owners are complaining and they want to move over to Nikon then ? This kind of problem is not limited to Canon; Nikon is not immune to this, BTW.
p.37 #14 · ['NEW Fix' UPDATE!] - MkIII AF still broken
I hear you loud and clear. I should clarify I'm not picking on Canon as I would expect proper handling from any company with any product. I would be saying the same thing whether it was Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Sony, or Sigma.
I'm aware there are many owners that are happy with properly working products, but for those that have a defective unit, they need to be treated with urgency and serious commitment to resolving their issues. Jeff has finally received that level of service, but it took quite an effort on his part.
Just to reiterate, I'm quite impressed with patience and willingness to stick with it.

I've had problems like you show here, but one thing seems wrong. Your screen capture doesn't show an AF point light up. It almost looks like it didn't have focus confirmation. In ones I've had problems with the AF points shows light up but the show is still blurry.
Don't doubt your problems but it sure looks like this particular shot didn't have AF locked.

Must confess my patience is wearing very thin. I would have been less peeved if they didn't say "if this doesn't work then we'll have you send in all of your lenses." The logic of this just eludes me. What happens when those lenses are used with other bodies? What happens when you buy a new lens? If I spend $1700 for a 85mm F1.2 should I also factor in 10 days of rental costs because I will have to send my camera in with my new lens to be calibrated before it will focus?

I am told that the focus indicator only appears as red if you are holding the focus button in when the shutter is released. I am using the * button, getting a confirmation light and beep. and releasing it to make sure that I am not inducing any movement into the tripod.

It looks like Henry is riped for the pickin', Nikon. Treat him better than the way Canon has treated him and you will get a life-time Nikonian in him. Credit where credit is due: Nikon, your 14-24mm lens is indeed an impressive lens. That is my first Nikon lens ever and I am pleased with it . You guys scored big on that one. I don't care what brand my lenses have as long as I get the most of my 21.1 MP out of my 1DsMarkIII, I am a happy camper.

Have you tried focus bracketing to see if it's front focusing? Switch your lens to manual and take several shots while moving the focus ring front and back.
