Hermie,thanks for correction
and I should correct myself again, I might go for NEC LCD2690WUXi(bigger size,12bits LUT than eizo s2411b) since I got a website selling it for less than eizo s2411b. www.iclick2computers.com
aaron ... a monitor purchase like this is probably not time to maximize your savings. Check the vendors return policy and dead pixel policy. At many places, you really can't return the monitor. When I purchased my 2690, I paid a little more to able to return the monitor at my discretion. My monitor is perfect ... no dead pixels or any other problems. I don't think that I have ever heard of a 2690 with pixel problems.
Well thanks for everyones impute on the 24" monitor. I made an NEC purchase today. The MultiSync LCD2490WUXi-BK . I actually found it at http://www.buy.com (key word / NEC monitors) for $868. best price before that was $1099. I will let you know when I'm up and running. Hopefully there won't be a pixel problem as the last poster says.
I just replaced an el cheapo 22" ACER because it messed up the sync of my other 4 monitors. For utility I use midrange samsungs (225BWs). Their IQ varies radically with just a few degrees in viewing angle. I have the 30" Mac Cinema display ($1800) and it is very good for various viewing angles. But my Graphics standard is my 22" Viewsonic CRT (G225f) which only cost about $550 new. So unless you want to spend $5500 for an Eizo (I read 3 huge pages of how they equalize color temp and luminance across their screen), I suggest you locate a New Olf Stock (or factory new CRT reconditioned) CRT graphics monitor.
Sooner or later you will also need a calibrator don't go cheap I did and had to buy another unit.

Andy ... I think that when I was shopping that buy.com had very good return policy. That is a really great price for the 2490.

I have purchased from RitzCamera and Amazon.
Actually, I had a dead pixel show up after 2 weeks of use on my 2690. Called NEC and they sent me a new monitor and paid return shipping on the defective unit. Couldn't have asked for more!
I purchased two 24" monitors last year. First was the Dell, which is a great monitor for around $600. The second was a risky purchase from a relatively unknown (in the USA) Chinese manufacturer named "SOYO" -- for only $300!
I figured it'd be a fairly crappy monitor, but wow -- it's stellar. In some ways I like it even better than the Dell. If you can find one on sale in your neighborhood, you'll be very happy and save (potentially) a boatload of cash.
We bought a Samsung 245T which has changed my mind about LCD's
I have been using a Sony GDM-FW900 which is a top of the line widescreen crt. I calibrate this display to less than 1 dE.
The samsung, has been calibrated also to less than 1 dE and even better passes all of the monitor brightness tests as listed on drycreek photo.
Really top notch. (About $750). Anandtech says it hasthe best calibration they have ever seen in an LCD.
It's also an extended gamet model.
