p.2 #1 · Careful with New Adobe RAW 4.3.1

I have reduced by PS work by 90% since I started using LR.

Of course if you need to work in layers, make composites, etc you need PS, but for my type of work (events) I rarely need more than LR.

While I understand your frustration, I don't think all the blame can be placed on Adobe. If the camera manufactureres would stop playing with their file formats it would be a lot easier on Adobe. You can't expect Adobe to give free updates every time a new camera hits the market. They would be doing free updates once a month if not more often.

I am not the person who the above comment is in response to (I don't bother with adobe software), but even though changing the closed file formats is lame, there are raw converters that don't use that as an excuse to charge money for updates.

look all software manufacturers come out with versions in their software and when they feel that an update is more then just minor and they put a level of effort in it they will charge you for that update. when adobe came out with CS3 i was charged for the update and it included ACR 4.0 which was a considerable improvement over 3.x. they are now up to 4.3.1. at no time has there been any additional charges levied for these nor would i expect it. same with lightroom. bought it a version 1.0 and they are up to 1.3.1. my wallets no thinner there either. now i estimate that the next major version of CSx is probable spring of 2009 bound. i also estimate that it will be somewhat different from what we are used to as they learn from the lightroom experience. my estimates is that the upgrade will be in the realm of $160 as they have in the past. in between though your gonna see a few more ACR updates for both CS3 and Lightroom and they aren't going to cost either.

I can do all the work I do now with CS2 & not suffer at all. I don't enter contests except once a year or less & when I do I rely on body & lens, lighting & perhaps a little smoke & mirrors from PSCS2 every now & then. All in all my biggest concern is management of files, so when LR is updated I'll take a serious look. Until then reading up on the DAM book is my next.

Hey anybody got a copy of Peter Krogh's The DAM Book they want to recycle/sell?

Hey, I used to be a PP fan, too! That transition from PP to PS wasn't easy was it? I always thought MicroGrafx threw in the towel too early but I guess they just felt it wasn't worth going up against the Adobe juggernaut.

This is interesting to me... I loved MicroGrafx PP8... still have it, BUT since CS3 stole the masking brush from PP8, which I thought was a brilliant tool, CS3 has stepped up in my book.... this tells me PP8 was ahead of the curve, but alas... they caved. If they had stayed with it and provided RAW implimentation I'd have hung in there with them.

I didn't use bridge much in CS2, but with adobe's DNG converter you can still use CS2 to edit newer raw files. Since it looks like you are in the process of coming up with a management based workflow this might not be as important as not wanting to change what you already have in place, but it is an option for using ACR in CS2 without havin gto upgrade.

I can't even get RAW 431 to work with CS3 Extended. I've done everything said to do on the Adobe web site and it still won't open RAW files. I updated Bridge from 2.0 to 2.1 and it won't even create thumbnails now. As it is right now, I hate Adobe. Before CS3 I never had these stupid update crappy quality control problems. If you want to update PSCS3 to teh latest version, which is 10.1, your install directory HAS TO BE NAMED Photoshop CS3. Since I do all custom installs, this means I can't use the update unless I install PSCS3 in its stock install mode. That my friends is called "LAZY we have a market monopoly FUCK YOU" marketing strategy. Until there is competition from some other company, I'm afraid Adobe will continue to produce bloated buggy products. My suggestion is that if you really need PSCS3 and ACR, pirate it until it gets to the point it's worth paying for, and I'm a paying customer. That's the only way to convince a monopoly to get with the quality program. You know, "Let them eat cake" until they chop your Fucking head off. Screw Adobe. The way it is now, I wouldn't pay 50 bucks for it. In fact, I'm uninstalling this POS and reinstalling CS2 and using DPP RAW from Canon untill a version of PS comes out that is at least as stable as CS2 was.

Update to 431 and see how "nice" it is. In fact, try updating to bridge 2.1 and PSCS3 10.1 I hope all your installs are in the default locations. It seems Adobe's programmers can't use the windows registry anymore. To fucked up on crack I guess.

Think I'm kidding:
http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3775

To install the Photoshop 10.0.1 update:
1. Disable all virus protection software.
2. Ensure that the folder on your hard drive containing Photoshop is named "Adobe Photoshop CS3."
3. Double-click the "Adobe Photoshop Updater" application. If the updater reports that it cannot find the application to update, uninstall Photoshop CS3, reinstall the application (using the default folder name "Adobe Photoshop CS3"), and then run the updater.
4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

They actually want you to REINSTALL Photoshop simply to use a FUCKING patch. What a bunch of jokes. If you want to patch your version use Newsgroups. The hackers fixed the patch so it will install in any folder you installed PSCS3 into. It's so simple. You simply tell the idiot patch to look in the registry and find teh install directory. I guess Adobe Programmers are so simple minded they can't even do that anymore. Adobe Losers.

Use Adobe's free DNG converter to convert the files to DNG (if not supported by your version of ACR, BTW you can download v3.7 which works with CS2) and then you can open them as normal in your CS2.
