p.1 #1 · Tamron 28-300 VC (IS) on the way!

The Tamron 28-300 /3.5-6.3 XR Di VC stabilized lens is due to hit the market on October 26 and will be made available first for Canon users.

More info see:

Hopefully we will see more VC lenses from Tamron in the future!

I'm interested in such a lens but I'm concerned about the fact that the vibration control (IS) on this one will not work properly with a 1Ds and may not work properly with a number of film cameras. I'd need some assurance that it will work properly with the next new digital camera.

It'll be interesting to compare it with the big Canon 28-300 L IS. Hopefully there'll be a review in a week or so.

I wonder if we will see a 28-75 VC and 17-50 VC anytime soon??

It would want to be a lot better than my 28-75. I'm disappointed with it and no longer use it. I should get it serviced but it may not be a warranty job and I'm not convinced it is worth the expense. Maybe I'm just too fussy, but so many people rave about their 28-75.

Alan, when I still have the tammy, it was an awesome lens... it was sharp and cheap. I did replace it with canon 28-70... but it does match my L in term of sharpness.

yeah, I have Tamron 28-75 and it's sharp. In fact, I had bought the 24-70 2.8L lens a week before I found the 28-75, and wish I'd never purchased the Canon lens. Wayyyy toooo expensive for doing the same thing that the 28-75 does.

Getting back to the 28-300 VC, I think I might try one on my 5D, as long as the price is reasonable. I haven't wanted or needed IS on any lenses yet, but on a walk-around Hyper-Zoom it might come in handy.

I hope that means the 18-250 with VC is at least in the design stage. That would make a great vacation lens for my 1.6 cropper!

Any idea on the pricing for the 28-300?

There are interesting compatibility notes on Tamron's site...

http://www.tamron.co.jp/en/news/release_2007/1018_vc.html

Here is an exerpt:

  1. If the 28-300mm Di VC (model A20) for Canon is used with EOS-1Ds, the Vibration Compensation Mechanism will not function properly
  2. When 28-300mm Di VC (model A20) is used in combination with some of the EOS Series (film camera), the VC function may not work: EOS - Rebel T2 or 300X (Kiss7), Rebel K2 or 3000V (Kiss Lite), 100QD, 10QD, 850, 750, 650, 620, 630

I am surprised to see that it won't work with the 1Ds.

As a couple of other notes:

- I can't see how many stops they claim that it will compensate for
- The pictures don't look as sharp as I would expect for their marketing flyer. They stopped down to around f/10 or so and the pictures were small, so you would have thought they would have been relatively sharp. Don't get me wrong. I am not expecting miracles out of a lens like this, but it just surprised me that they were as soft as they were for the marketing brochure. They did purposely write that they were from the prototype though.

B&H:
Tamron 28-300 VC: $599
Tamron 28-300 non-VC: $399

Amazon:
Tamron 28-300 VC: $699.95
Tamron 28-300 non-VC: $369

Edit: haha, looks like you beat me to the punch by a few seconds.

Thanks for the quick response on the pricing guess I could have searched before I asked; thanks for not flaming me. I also noticed that they did not talk about how many stops they claim it to have. I would assume, which is foolish, that it would have to be 3 stops if they expect it to be a hit.

I think I'll stick with the Canon 70-300 Non-DO IS instead of this guy. Not only is it cheaper but in all likely hood its better optically. I would still consider this if the reviews come out positive, however.

Will wait for user (sucker) reviews before deciding between this and Canon 70-300 IS lens

p.1 #17 · Tamron 28-300 VC (IS) on the way!

I've had a preorder on this from adorama for about 3 months. I've had the Canon 28-300 IS and I doubt this one will be close but for what I want to use it for, it should be fine. I had the 18-200 Sigma OS on a 20D for a few weeks and it was good at f8. For about the same money ($599) I figured the 28-300 would be better for me. I can use this on the 5D if I want wide or the 40D if I want a bit more reach. I usually lug the 100-400 around for some event shooting (like parades and festivals) and think this Tamron may be the ticket. There were a couple of things I didn't like about the Canon and the first was weight. Man it's a beast. Looking forward to getting this one to give it a spin.

The Sigma 18-200 OS manual says that the OS helps 3-4 stops and that corresponds to my experience as well. However, OS requires a lot more time to settle than Canon IS. In a pinch, with a Canon lens you can successfully take an immediate shot (without giving IS any time to settle) but with the Sigma, the shot is almost certainly ruined in that case and you would be better off without OS.

It seems that 1-2 seconds are required for a 4 stop advantage, but I've understood that the same applies to Canon 70-200f4L IS as well. In my opinion the Sigma OS in this lens is better (in terms of stops) than the IS of any of my lenses (but I don't own any of the new 4-stop ones by Canon) but it is also slower than any of my Canon lenses, also in AF.

So, I wonder what this Tamron will be like.

I had one for a couple of weeks. It was decent, but I realised that there was a focus problem on my EOS 5D. Between 28mm and about 50mm it would hunt and not focus on infinity, meaning manual focus was necessary for reliably sharp images at infinity. Tamron have so far failed to replicate my findings, perhaps not surprisingly as their support rep told me they don't have an EOS 5D!

For info, the compatibility info on Tamron's website is incorrect. I tried using the lens with my EOS 100. Whilst the lens is listed as lacking VC function on the EOS 100QD, the standard EOS 100 film camera is not mentioned. Not only does VC not work, but after a few shots the lens caused the camera to "crash" and lock up until the lens and battery were removed and a Canon lens mounted.
