Are those done from raw files or done as in-camera jpegs?

Any post processing done to them?

reply to this and the AMALGAM person...

Those 2 pics are in camera jpgs, I just shot them LARGE and scaled them down....I did not even know cs3 could read the raw files today, and I was not about to try the canon software. The watch one is straight out of camera, did not touch it, the 2nd one of my wife and daughter I messed with the curves a little bit but that was all-but both are jpgs.

And yes, the hotshoe is cool, I shot these with my 580 on a cord, with my tiny photoflex softbox, was hard to hold and shoot with both, but works....

Gosh, this is a long thread . I've had my G9 for 2 weeks. Its no 5D but I didn't expect anything even close. My last G was the original G1 where I started shooting in RAW and I would only consider a pocket cam with RAW.

I find it close to what I'd like--I'd prefer wider--since I'm a WA shooter primarly. I would have been happy with the 10MP but others who have both the G7 and the new G9 have shown that the G9 is at least as good for noise and perhaps a bit better than the

Diane ... thanks for sharing your impressions. It was very helpful. Have you had the chance to compare the IQ of the G9 to your husband's F30? I have a F31fd and I have been looking for a second, more sophisticated P&S to either augment or replace it. I am wondering how a G9 would compliment a F31fd, which is very similar to the F30.

Currently, I have a 40D, 400D, and F31fd. I have been trying to figure out how to improve my options below the 40D. I have the 400D setup as a P&S with the 17-85mm IS.

No, I haven't done that. Maybe I'll have a chance this week (he said he left it at work). One of the big things would def. be the difference between shooting RAW and shooting jpegs--I can do a lot more with the G9 in ACR/LR than I can ever do with the F30--and also access to easily change settings more like I do on my DSLR. However, he uses it primarily as a lower light small camera for his work and its great for that--better than the G9 I'm sure. Horses for courses as the Brits say LOL. But--as a 'general' camera with decent light--and esp. as a camera that I can use much as my DSLR--easily change settings, EC, etc.---I'd take the G9. I also much prefer shooting with it--I don't like the really smaller cameras. To have both would certainly cover you LOL--but, though I have noticed a number of people doing this--does it make sense rather than a small DSLR (as your 400D/17-85)? I haven't really thought about carrying 2--wonder if people actually do carry both of them with them.

Question for G9 owners (sorry if it's been asked but it's a long thread):

What is the shot-to-shot time like in RAW on the G9?

Does it do two or three and then lock up for hours or is it better than my old Pro1 for example?

It exists.

It's called the Sony DSC-R1.

Try it, its a great camera (though it won't fit in your pocket!)

Yes, kudos for the R1. I'm disappointed that Sony didn't continue its evolution.

was able to test out continuous in raw. it'll take a shot bout once per second. won't be "busy" for more than a fraction of a second. i took 25 consecutive shots and the write time never increased. pushing the playback button, the shot was displayed almost instantly. single shot response is just as good. no annoying delays, well, except for the AF, but that's the P&S's achilles heel.

dhphoto -- seems to take 3 or 4 seconds between shots with a Sandisk Ultra 2 -- at least for the 4 or 5 I went through. After that it appeared to be 'clear'.
Fine for a P&S!

Here are some more sample shots:

Its my first day so nothing to complicated.

All at ISO 100, From raw files, Quick post process

Cropped Image at 100%(2400X2400)

Some points I think are worth noting:

- ISO 200 JPEG's shows significant NR artifacts. ISO 200 Raw files don't. I haven't tried ISO 400 but I'm hopeful.

- This is my first point in shoot in 6 years. Chromatic aberration is really bad compared to my SLR's. It compares to shooting with my 14mm 2.8 Sigma.

-Color of LCD when shooting seems a lot cooler than the actual scene. Not a big deal but definitely something you don't see in an optical viewfinder.

-This thing is big but its also small. I was having trouble using the controls especially that damn wheel. Kind of a pain but I will eventually get used to it.

-Optical viewfinder sucks. I know its pretty standard with this type of camera but for my purpose its absolutely useless.

I'm pretty impressed with the results so far. Its small, light, has most of the manual controls that I need, it goes were the SLR's can't go, and produces really good images(so far). I have a long way to go but I'm confident that once I get the post processing down the results will be sufficient for my pro level needs.

I will post more later on.

amalgam & andyseer, thanks, thats what I wanted to hear!

I will be buying one today. It seems to be just what I have been looking for (except for the lack of native 28mm, which is a big error)

I did try both today in our pretty dark library---always a good test for low light. The F30 did very well--and the shots at f/2.8 (at 1/9s handheld, but braced) were without really visible noise. The images showed a good bit more CA/fringing, there was less detail in some of the areas but would probably not affect most people's opinion of the image. However, to get to the Av/ISO setup I had to go into menus, etc.--What a pain--and that's how I remembered it. I may try them both on A or the Fuji's equivalent of P without flash again.

The G9 did well--and with one quick application of 'weak noise' in Noiseware Pro--they were equal but with the G9 with a bit more detail IMO. The really nice thing was that I could just twist a dial for ISO and Av. Oh, forgot to say that I shot in RAW, converted with ACR 4.2(with only a tweak in WB since ACR doesn't get it right at this point/unsupported), opened both in PSCS3 and inspected side to side. The resolution, of course, is different so I had to compensate for that, but the F30's IQ and the G9--but with Noiseware, were both fine and acceptable at ISO400. The ACR NR did not do enough of a job to make it equal. It took the added app. I could have tried Noise Ninja too, but have found that I prefer NW. I don't have to use it with the 5D but if/when I would ever shoot with my older 10D, I would have to use it for higher ISO/low light shots.

If you want out of the box low light with almost no noise--the F series is probably fine, but my choice would still be the G9 since

Question for those who have used an external flash on the G7/G9 -- when I use on-camera ETTL flash with my xxD, the general approach is to set it to full manual, pick a shutter speed and aperature, then let the flash 'figure out the rest' with FEC to compensate as needed.
With a 580 (model 1) on my G9, it looks like the camera's full manual mode only supports manual flash power settings, and that I 'need' a 580-II to get manual camera settings with automatic flash.
Granted, the flash is larger than the camera, but the combo is still smaller

I don't have a G9 but this "manual" flash mode seems to be a characteristic of the G series cameras. Hope I'm wrong but don't buy the 580EX II in an attempt to overcome the limitation of the G9.

If this camera had a rotating viewfinder, I'd be in. It's the only reason I would move from my old G2. Great compositional tool! Why has it been discontinued in the G series? It would make the G9 the perfect P&S.

I think the reason that the LCD has become fixed is that viewing angles have improved to the point where fixed displays can work reasonably well.

Hi Gordon,

You are correct. I re-read the manual (this thing is waaaaaaaaaay more complicated than my 1D) and auto flash isn't supported in manual mode. I got confused because they have a special section just for the 580-II.

Thanks

I think it is because the LCD is much, much bigger and to have it pivoting would add extra weight and thickness to the camera.

It seems clear to me Canon have shaped the G7/9 in order to do away with lens caps and make the cameras more pocketable

Would Adobe likely update Camera RAW for G9 files soon? It appears to not have been included in the 4.2 update of a few days ago which does happen to encompass 40D files.
