The negative space rocks. This much negative space is hard to pull off but you've done it without a hitch. You can visualize the whole orchestra with their eyes peeled.
Having served for eight years on the Eufaula, Alabama City Council, I can tell you that the best thing that could happen to you would be for you to lose the election. Your photo, on the other hand, IS a winner. It is powerful in its simplicity. Very well done, my friend!
Best regards,
Robert
Robert, I’m really flattered to get such a well-meant advice from a former Professional Politician, thank you!

Great image.
Hi Dave, thanks for the comments!
It was the only way to create the mental illusion of a large audience (it only took a couple yards of black cotton fabric… )
"My fellow Umurricans, I wanted each of you to be the first to know that the missing eighteen minutes have been found. They were on my answering machine all along. Since I am no longer the president, and am no longer alive, I feel that I am the perfect candidate for Anti-"Terrism" Czar of Conetoe, NC. Make no mistake about it, I will not be confused with those Russkiy Nikon Tsars of old. And, I promise lower property taxes for all Canon users."
Sorry, couldn't resist trying to fill some of that "negative space".
Seriously, this is a wonderful exposition of the idea of communication, the more so because you've had to be subject and photographer. I've been there; it ain't easy! [from many, if not hundreds of thousands]
Great idea, John. You always come up with something creative. The use of the negative space is fab. (not sure if I wouldn't have like a tad more of the arms/sleeves, but that's just a personal preference...). The black and white really adds something.
When I saw this photo in the thumbnails I knew instantly it was yours and clicked on it. I really like it! This photo really "speaks"! Very well done John!

Oh Jess, what a speech, a perfect ‘filler’ for the negative space!
I’m in NC and in the name of Peace, when elected, I will lower the property taxes to ALL Nikon AND Cannon users!

Hello Suse, thank you!
You are correct about showing more of the arms; I tried, but also wanted to have at least 70% of negative space in front of the speaker. I made several versions, but to keep the correct ratio the subject had to be further away and I thought that would reduce the (communication) message’s effectiveness…

Thanks for the comments Louis!
I guess you know that I always speak with my hands and that gave it away…
