Thanks for the great posts kylee. Any chance you can do a comparison in RAW? I assume the camera came with a version of DPP for RAW processing. Doing a comparison with RAW would let us (and you) determine how much of the noise reduction is on chip and how much is in the JPG conversion.

Remember that no sharpening or NR means that it's set at the lowest user setting. We don't know what the manufacturers do with these files. We don't want to pretend that there is a true neutral, unprocessed file because this encourages companies to increasingly mess with the files.

Also, looking at 100% crops puts the higher res camera at a disadvantage relative to results we would expect in the real world. Not that there is a single right way to do this. Just that attempts to be as objective as possible can lead to misleading results.

I think a true test (and he may have done this), would be to use the same lens, at the same distance with the same exact exposure settings (manually set) on both bodies with the same exact lighting. The difference in FOV should be apparent between the bodies and the images, that would be a more accurate representation of the noise relative to image size. The 1DsM2 is going to resolve more image, and the noise is really relative to what gets printed. Based on what I've seen here so far, I don't think you'd notice the slightest difference in a large print. For pixel peepers, you may be able to detect it on a monitor though. If you are going to move the cameras to compensate for FOV, you should do it both ways. Move the 1Ds closer AND move the 1DIII back. Show the effects of both actions.

Looks like the 1DIII is losing resolution due to noise reduction at the highest ISO.

sorry for the delay in RAW images, let me go back to my car to get the packing and install the newer DPP, my ACR won't open the 1D3 RAW

the test is done with the same lens, 70-200 2.8

this is a smaller sensor with fewer overall pixels vs another larger sensor with more overall pixels, it seems almost impossible to make everyone to feel fair in every respect, thats why I shot in various ways with the 1Ds2 to make up for the intrinsic "unfairness".

you know what? I need more brain here posting than publishing in Lancet.

Could you post one with the chrominance NR set to low and the luminance set to zero? Thanks for all your effort. These are looking really good.

Thank you for your posts Kylee. It really seems that 1Ds2 has more detail at higher ISOs and a noise more like the film cameras one. The 1D3 shows a more "clear" image related to noise grain but for losing that detail.

Regards.

Thank you Kylee!

From my perspective, the fact that there is so little difference between the two in the 1600 images is very impressive and means that Canon has produced a $4500 camera with 10 FPS, improved AF and a host of other goodies that equals the IQ of their $7000 camera. Not too shabby and a pretty good days work! Add an extra 12mp and the 1DsMkIII is going to be a killer camera.

Dear Crytos,

Thanks for imput, which part of the picture are you referring to when you describe about the 1Ds2 detail? Just want to make sure we are looking at different area. https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/emoticons/smiley.gif

the jpg algorithm does reduce the shapness a little bit, but RAW file clearly showed the true potential

look at the ISO 6400 vs 3200 push 1 stop, look at the head of the battery, you really see the 14bit capture shines in retreiving extreme shadow details

In HK it is much cheaper than that, ~US$4000 for the first few cams, when stable in a few weeks many shop will be selling at ~3800-3900.

That's right Kylee. The RAWs show all its potential and there is a significant difference with the JPEGs but I refered to the bookshelf areas in the "Page 2" shots. I can see more detail in the 1Ds2 shots, the 1D3 shows a little bit "creamy" effect.

Regards.

those shots focused at slightly different area (only know when I see on the monitor), so tough to tell how much is due to DOF issue

Kylee, congratulations on your new camera. Can you tell us the name of the store in HK were you bought the 1D3 and whether they have a web site? Thanks!
