One of my Japanese butterfly koi making a big splash. After grabbing a bite of food she spun around quite forcefully, then headed down to savor her prize. I have a 1200 gallon koi pond with nine koi, ranging in size from 6" to 31". This little gal is approx. 12" long; her name is "Lola" ...she's quite a showgirl. :-)
C&C welcome. FYI: I'm going to be busy all week with company but I'll try to check in. Thanks in advance or any C&C; and good luck everyone!
Wow really beautiful shot Bev. I have always liked koi. A lady near me had 10 koi stolen from her pond. The total value was $8500 according to the newspaper. My dad always called them 'fancy carp fish', but I think he liked them too.
I like it. Kind of a really nice abstract. I wonder about cropping a little off the top and the bottom, seems like some extra space there. Great color and action. sf

Looks like your artistic talents are rubbing off on your Koi fish, as she creates a masterpiece that is captured by the artist/photographer.
Great Job!
Tom
Thanks for the feedback everyone! Lola is flattered by your comments. :-)
TOM: Koi theft? Ugh. those thieves must have been organized to accomplish such a difficult feat. Catching and transporting large koi is not easy at all, or a fast process. My pond is part of our patio area and visible from 3 rooms in the house, including mstr. bedroom. I don't have that much $ invested in my koi anyway, but it would still be a pricey and sad loss indeed. Koi can live for up to 60 years, you can get very attached to them after many years. They can display personalities of sorts and recognize you and follow you as you walk around the pond; some are tame enough to let you feed or pet them. Amazing 'carp' I'd say.
Superb work with the color Beverly, and a nice capture of the motion!
When I look at the image my eyes start on the left, find and identify the beautiful koi, then end up back on the moving water again.
great job
Peter
Thanks, everyone! The colors are always amazing with these fish. When they come up to the surface like this you see their full brilliance and reflective qualities. Lola looks like she was dipped in gold. The deeper she is in the pond the less shiny and brilliant, of course. I do have some with metallic scales (kujaku) which are actually harder to photograph because they reflect so much light they can blow out highlights if you don't underexpose the shots. I love photographing them.
HH: if I rotated this the water line would not be level (it's just visible above the koi's body if you look closely).
Cal: great pun "carping"! ha
Greg: No fish & chips served here-- Lola sez you must to go stand in the time out corner for even joking about that! ;-)
I love ALL your Koi shots, of course. (I have visited your Gallery, and website, and your fish make gorgeous subjects!) This one really captures the assignment perfectly, Bev. Another winning image!
