To All: I've seen a lot of lens tests and comparisons that are concerned with sharpenss but not so many with bokeh. I know there was one thread here a year ago that dealth with bokeh but I think its lost. it would be great to see some images with bokeh you think is pleasing taken wide open with lenses in the 50mm range.
You know I have been searching for the "perfect" 50 for some time. I have some of these animals in a drawer here. My intention is not to collect them; I have to decide for which one(s) to keep, the sooner the better.
What do you suggest a test picture setup should look like? I may try to set something up within a few weeks. I'm sure the bad weather we are having will be with us for some time...
Jonas what do you shoot most with your 50mm lenses? Whatever the subject, probably the best tests would be real life situations for you. I like to shoot plants, flowers, and people mostly.
As far as how to structure the layout of a test....This is sort of philosophical, but to me bokeh helps impart a candid element and a sense of time to an image. For example most studio shots seem sharp and posed and have clean backgrounds so you don't see anything going on in the non subject part of the image. But an image with bokeh tells the viewer this is not a posed shot, this is an actual moment in time caught in a real place with things happening in the background. Am I making sense here? Well so for a test, I think the subject should be something with distinct details like a face or a flower and the background should be busy with stuff. The face could help determine the sharpness as it will be important to some and the background will help show the bokeh. Maybe a camera to subject distance that allows the subject to consume no more than 25% of the total image space and the objects in the background a little more than the distance from the camera to the subject. The lighting would have to be even across the frame - but not sure how important that is. These shots should be shot wide open but maybe also at a few stops down too to see how they change?
I wonder if we can agree on a basic subject and layout and then try to take some pictures that would roughly be equivalent. Since what we want to test will be judged not with numbers but by feel, I think it would be okay to not have all lenses tested with the same setting.

Seller: NonFiction, aka Scott Squire
Item: Leica Summilux-R 50/1.4 E60
Scott offered the lens for sale as a part of his big on-going sell-out. Communication was great, the description of the item was on the money and it arrived in a nice parcel. Delivery from the US to me in EU was without problems thanks to Scott's good hand with paperwork and I'm a happy new owner of the lens. Thank you Scott.
^^ I tried to post the above in the feedback thread in the B&S forum but it didn't seem to work.

Well, now that I have a 50 Lux E60 in my hand I guess I'll find about this lens for myself. Thanks again, to you who contributed.
A question: The mirror on my 5D smacks into the rubber shield , just as expected, when focusing anywhere between 10m and infinity. Is there anyone that can give me an advice about how to remove it without damaging anything? Thank you,
Jonas, equal thanks are owed to you. I wish you the best with the lens! Now, anyone want a 28-90 ASPH? Oops, no hijacking. Back to your Wonderful World of Fifties!
