Me too. The sraw is a bright idea but I bet it's too small for most people. If you can't make a nice cropped 8x10 print of something then it's not of use. If say there's a release of a 16 to 20 something pixelmonster down the road then yes a 5-6-7-8 meg setting would be nice. Steve

Obviously there will be a 20+ MP 1Ds3 coming this year, and its sRAW will be liked a lot by many of this camera's relatively few users.

The sRAW exists in 1D3 for two reasons:
1. Some of this camera's users will find of beneficial
2. Both 1D cameras have many other commonalities as well

My question is will the 1D3s resolution/IQ be better than that of the 20D/30D having similar pixel density? I imagine it might through some sort of mircolens or photosite size manipulation on the sensor and different processing.

I also imagine that the diffraction limiting of a 20+ Mpx 1D3 would be similar to that of the 20D/30D.

Today I was invited by Canon CPS in the Netherlands and they had all the new stuff. Sadly you were not allowed to put a card in the camera.

The menus are quite different and more alike the 400D. Very easy to handle and it took me 5 minutes to get used to it. There are a lot of buttons on different places.
All in all the handling of the camera is much better.
Life preview is working quite well.
10Fps is fast!!!!!!!!
Also AF is very fast. They had a 85L II and the focussing was quite good, faster as on my own 1DsII.
The body feels lighter and there are some minor changes on the grip and the dimensions.

The 580EX II looks much better. No more ^%$#@&^%$ with connecting on the body. The old omnibounce will fit

The 16-35L II is a little bigger/heavier but barely noticable. According to the rep the main reason for updating was it's IQ that is more or less the same as the 17-40L. It should be better now, but no proof yet.

They had a M80 media store as well. It's expected to hit the market together with the 1DII.

Now there's a huge assumption! I'm surprised at how little speculation there is about the potential demise of the Ds line. Based upon this announcement, I'm tending toward the possibility that the 1Ds Mk II was the last of its breed, and what comes next will be completely new. It just doesn't make sense that the 1D MkII N got a makeover and the 1Ds Mk II didn't. I'm guessing there's more to come, and it won't be in the form of a Ds...

design and marketing cycle. it will show up and it will look just like the 1D3. when? look at the last spacing between the 1Ds an the 1Ds2. they threw the 1D2 in between the 1Ds and 1Ds2 the 1D2n was the odd man out because the 1D3 was not quite ready for prime time. it was throw them a minor bone to keep their interest. you do not fire off your entire volley at once. then you have a gaping hole to fill next time. its evolution not revolution everytime. it keeps the cash flow good.

I'd never trade my 5D for any Nikon (or in fact any camera of any maker save perhaps the M8), so to my mind the question of why no 40 model is the 5D. All you need to do is wait around a little either for Canon or Nikon or any other brand for the next best thing. If you don't like that I suppose you could start another camera company and do things your way. Or you could by the D200 and go over to the Nikon forum and start complaining that Nikon has no cameras that can even come close to the 5D, even though that model is pehaps getting a bit long in the tooth. As for me, I'm waiting patiently for the 3D, or better yet, the reincarnated F1New (still the best canon ever made) with a FF sensor, FD manual focus lens mount and anolog metering.

3D may come in a few years but a DSLR with FD mount? Not likely.

I like my F1 (and A1) systems too and still use them at times. My son uses one of my old F1s for his photo courses in school. When I decided to look into digital I was hoping to find a digital back for my F1 or A1 but since not such beastie exists I settled on the 20D as best for my needs and budget, since I'd need some lenses too, but I would have loved to have been able to afford a 1 series digital.

Not likely indeed: with 20 years of EOS lens mount behind us, what on earth would be the reason for Canon to introduce a manual focus, FD mount DSLR any more?

For anyone wanting such a camera, I suggest buying a Nikon film scanner or an Epson V4990 or V700 scanner instead. I don't know how good the Nikon scanners are, but with dry scanning, you get about 1800 by 2700 pixels = 5 MP of concrete resolution (or much more of nominal resolution) from your slides with the Epson scanners.

No, it΄s a mistake of the guy that did the picture, everybody knows that is the 1D MkIII the one that has been released

Do we know how soon the RAW converters will suopport the MkIII? I'm interested particularly in C1 ...

This is all I've found re C1 and the MkIII:

Since Capture One's algorithms were developed initially for 16 Bit color of Phase One Digital Back RAWs, can't see where there would be any issues with 14 Bit Canon files.
One thing Canon has been good about is the sharing of files and information.

TIA

In my experience it usually takes a couple months for ACR to get the updated RAW format files from Canon. I can't say for C1.

Well, I know that is not going to happen, but can't we dream? After all, look at the M-8. In any case, I still prefer the viewfinder and analog exposure info display in the F1N to anything else currently offered.

I still don't get the hype over the "3D". It has become such a mythical camera that nothing will ever *really* be the 3D. That being said, the uping of the specs for AF on the 1DmkIII could mean that the replacement of the 5D may see the 45pt AF. Beyond that, the body on the 5D is already pretty much better than the EOS 3. We'll probably see a 4D, or something similar with specs that are kicked up a notch closer to 1 series specs now that the 1 series specs have been kicked up.

I recently found out that the leading manufacturer of traffic/ticket radar cameras uses the Canon 1d MkIIn in their product. I wonder if they will be using the 1d mkIII soon. It seems a sad end for a noble camera.

They are still busy trying to figure just how much money they can extract from the pros and early adopters

Rumors of higher prices for the Mark III might help move the older Mark IIN bodies off the dealers shelves. At as much as a 36% higher street price, some users will be tempted to buy the Mark II's and use them as the tools they were intended to be. I'll be buying the Mark III at whatever final price is established, but then it's a luxury I can afford. There are so many evolutionary improvements in this cameras technology that will enhance the image making experience that the cost seems like a bargain. As far a dealers charging above MSRP prices, why not? It's called capitalisim and the last time I looked it was still legal in the U.S..

how is the 5D body better then the EOS 3 The EOS 3 did have some weather sealing, was built tougher and IMHO had a more comfortable vertical grip.
