I think all the posts here and on DPR to their images have caused more traffic than they can handle. About 50% of the time I try to go to one of their pages, it won't load.
I'm really mainly concerned with the low ISO shots (gasps from the crowd), and my initial reaction was that they looked a little soft. Of course since many of us are PP our RAW shots, it is difficult to make comparisons to jpegs someone else posts. So I pulled up the house shot at ISO100 for the 1DIII, 1DIIN, and 1DsII, and with those as references, the sharpness looks comparatively pretty good.
So in going through the menu operations on the lower half here: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/E1DMK3/E1DMK3A3.HTM
I must have missed how one changes from CF to SD now. I don't see the button label on the back of the body anymore, and I can't find it(or missed it) in the menus. Anyone see how this is done now?

No problem here accessing IR at any time - I use firefox and have broadband.
Dunno why you are having the hassles

So do I, Firefox 2 and 5MB charter, no problems with any other sites this morning or last night, but frequently IR pages say server not found, and then a minute later it will load.
I wonder how dealer orders compare to Canon's forecast? Perhaps the 1DsIII timing is affected by initial 1DIII demand. Assembly must be done by the same people.
I expect this is precisely the case. 1D Mk III orders can easily be expected to exceed anticipatable 1Ds Mk III orders. Marketing will want to show high numbers in the first couple of quarters.
If the 1D and 1Ds are produced on the same line, I would guess Canon would spend the first 6-9 months fulfilling anticipated 1D demand, then shift for a period to 1Ds assembly...having enough on the dock by late 2007 to start shipping.

While not having any direct evidence to support the claim, I do believe there is a single 1 series "production line." I haven't seen a 1DsII that is anything close to recent in date code, and I would guess Canon has been making 1D MkIII bodies for some weeks now, with only the latest firmware needed to be installed prior to shipment.
I believe that, had Canon really wanted to, they could have announced both the DIII and DsIII simultaneously. I don't think they would have been able to meet demand for both bodies however, and Canon doesn't seem to want to go down the path Nikon is on right now, with irritated dealers, and thus irritated customers, waiting 6 months and more for back orders.
The High Tone Priority examples on IR look very interesting. Especially if you look at the pink flower petals. It's almost a more film like s-curve response rather than straight into clipping like you'd expect.
Anyone see any downsides to this technology (other than lack of ISO 100 support)?
Perhaps this is the begining of less blown highlights on DSLRS.
Copy & Paste this info about the 1D MkIII shooting in natural enviroment saw at DPRW:
"From Artie Morris's BIRDS AS ART BULLETIN #224
This is a quote from Artie's latest bulletin.
"From Thursday, February 22 through Wednesday morning, February 28 I had the opportunity to work with the just- (and I mean just) announced Canon EOS 1D Mark III Professional Digital Camera Body"
Second Quote
"On the Friday Anhinga Trail ITF-Workshop we were fortunate to watch an alligator dine on an unfortunate Brown Pelican. With the Mark III in my hand I figured that it would be a good chance to check out the high ISO settings; with the gator chewing I knew that I needed a shutter speed of at least 1/500 sec. to freeze the action so ISO 3200 it was. I think that I had set the Custom Function for High ISO Noise Reduction and the image was processed in DPP with Low Noise Reduction set for both color and luminance. The converted RAW image exhibited very little noise. Both Robert OToole and I agreed that the noise in this and other ISO 3200 images from the Mark III was comparable to ISO 400 in the 1Ds MII and the MII 1DN. Virtually noise-free images at ISO 3200 will open up new worlds to nature photographers."

I also would like to choose AF points with the new Joystick...
The first thing I thought when I saw the joystick was the same - until I thought about how to pick AF points when using the vertical controls. That's why they haven't set it up that way, so no matter which way you're holding the camera, you can access the same functions (or just about).

Me too. It's a pity that there is no CF for that.
Oh no.... ANOTHER CFn. added No thanks I prefer my * & registered AF button. Having a joystick controlling the AF point on a 45 point AF system is not my idea of getting things done quickly. Keep in mind that on a 5D/30D it's easy. On a 1 series, it will be nightmare & a lot of missd shots.....
I sure with that SOMEBODY would test out the 3200/6400 ISO on this camera in a dimly lit concert-type venue, and compare it to some shots made with the 1D-II in the same exact venue (preferably that same night).

You may not have seen the latest addendums to the preview at IR: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/E1DMK3/E1DMK3EXPOSURE_INCANDESCENT.HTM
- he has shot in exactly the low-light you are looking for, with excellent results, and
compared it to the 1DIIn
hope this helps, David - IR have done an awsome job on the 1DIII
don't miss his tests on the new highlight preservation facility too
