I first saw it over at DPR. It didn't look like a typical Canon press release, to me.
Also, I'm still trying to figure out how they're doing the live-preview . . does it have a pellicle mirror? You'd think they'd mention that if it did.
Edit: I guess they're just lifting the mirror out of the way . . so when you're doing lvie preview, you will NOT be able to see anything through the viewfinder.
That kinda sucks big time, and indicates that Canon has reached the limits of their CMOS sensor technology. I guess I'll get the 16-35 II for the 1Ds MK II and then get Nikon for the teles. What a PITA.

Why do you say that? They added 25% more pixels and STILL managed to add another stop on the high-end. Of course, I'm assuming that the new ISO3200 is similar in quality to the old ISO1600.
Sweet... really want to see how it handles the noise.
oh.. btw
FS: 16-35 mkI
-----------------------------------
a few highlights (copied directly)
* 10MP
* but unlike its predecessors, 19 of them, rather than seven, are of the high-precision cross-type configuration
* The extra power of dual DIGIC III processors has also allowed analog-to-digital conversion to improve from 12 to 14 bits per channel, meaning that tonal gradation for RAW images is now divided into 16,384 separate levels per channel rather than 4,096
* The DIGIC III image processor replaces the DIGIC II and assists in rendering very fine image detail and natural color reproduction with 50% less shadow noise than previous EOS digital SLRs
* 10fps
* Yet another improvement comes from the revised microlens array that collects light for the sensor. The new unit has smaller gaps between the tiny lenses, meaning more light is gathered and less is lost. All of this helps to explain the sensational low-light performance of the EOS-1D Mark III Digital SLR and the terrific quality of images shot at ISO 3200 and 6400.
* With the EOS-1D Mark III Digital SLR, if the card slot cover is opened during the writing operation, an alarm sounds and a warning message appears on the screen to indicate that writing is in progress. The card writing continues even if the slot cover is opened.
* Mark III Digital SLR, a photographer has several options in addition to conventional SLR through-the-lens viewing. If the camera is going to be close at hand, the new Live View shooting mode lets the user focus and compose on the extra-large 3.0-inch LCD screen and magnify the image 5x or 10x, to achieve the optimal focus
* Another first for a professional digital SLR of this caliber is a complete dust management solution, called the EOS Integrated Cleaning System. The new CMOS image sensor is designed with a lightweight infrared absorption glass cover that vibrates for 3.5 seconds when the camera is turned on or off
* The shutter, newly upgraded to 300,000 cycle durability

It still has less linear resolution than the 1Ds MK II from 2004. I'm sure a similar 1Ds MK II could have decent ISO 1600 and samller pixels, but obviously Canon prioritizes the PJ market first as that is the most profitable. It just sucks for us weirdos prioritizing image quality over ISO or anything else in mid 2007. Bad timing is my life's work.
Looks good, And Canon claims that it will be priced the same as the Mk IIn!!
I think this will be my next camera when I upgrade. 10fps sounds great, and the live LCD would be very useful for PJ's or wedding shooters, as well as for those really low/high shots where you can't get your eye on the viewfinder.

My guess is that YOUR dream camera will come this fall.
