Haven't had a lot of time to participate in Fred's weekly assignments lately. As it was, I have been running pretty late to get this is in.
This is my grand father's pocket watch which I inherited when he passed away. Unfortunately it was in the state you see it here when I got it, complete with broken face. Although you can't see it clearly in the photo, it has a lovely engraving of his initials on the outside case. I think the other interesting thing about the watch, is the box that it came it in when it found its way to me. For the keen eye, there is an Australian 2 pence stamp on it which haven't been in existence for a very long time.
Technical details - this photo was taken with a Canon 30D, 100mm macro @ f5, 1/200. Two flashes were used - one Nikon sb28 (power set to 1/64) snooted with a focus on the watch face, the second a Canon 580ex (power set to 1/16) fired towards the ceiling and bounced on to the scene.
Wonderful composition of such a beautiful, memorable subject. The photo and box are a nice touch. Great story-telling image with just the right DOF, too.
I love this image, and your story. Seems you and I both have a great deal of affection for our grandfathers. What a lovely thing for you to have to remember him by.
I've been studying this because I really like the watch and the box. I just don't know about the background picture. I found myself trying to figure out how it might connect with the watch.
I tend to agree with you Al. I was really looking for something more appropriate to have in the background. I knew that I wanted to put the box and watch on something "old", but my hunt around the house didn't reveal anything suitable. As a 2nd option, I looked through some books for photos of "grandfathers" which I could use, and I ended up settling on this. Unfortunately I didn't have an appropriate picture of my real grandfather to put there.
