Is this really true? Certainly Lightroom supports Keywords, which will certainly work for location, person... And I dump my files in folders that are named yyyymmdd, so that takes care of date. Does Lightroom support the stars ratings? If so, that takes care of everything on your list. I understand your comment on offline storage though. However that is not important to me. It sounds like IView is simply a more robust cataloging program, which may or may not be needed depending on the photographer.

Yes, iView is more robust for cataloging, but Lightroom is much more powerful than many people realize. You can sort by location, rating, date and person in Lightroom using filters, the metadata browser and keywords. You could do it in 4 clicks, too ;-)

I am currently using Aperture to manage my photos and loving it. Very easy and flexible with TONS of features.

I also plan on downloading the 1.0 demo once it becomes available to compare between Aperture and it.

Take a look at IMatch as well (PC only, but you said that's what you use). I picked it over iView as it suits me better, but iView would have been my other choice. I don't use Picasa as I find it way too lightweight my my needs. I also don't like the all-in-one apps (anyone remember Works?); I looked at LR and was quite underwhelmed.

In the end you have to work with the apps, so take the list we've compiled in this thread, get the demos and pick what works for you.

There are hundreds of programs you can use to view images, but you asked about organization...

My directory structure looks something like this...

C;\My Pictures\(user-name)\Originals\(event-description)\JPEG
C;\My Pictures\(user-name)\Originals\(event-description)\RAW
C;\My Pictures\(user-name)\Edited copies\(event-description)\JPEG

user-name is any one of four of us at home.
event-description is whatever we feel is meaningful enough to tell at a glance what the pictures are from.

I do not use the standard Windows directory and auto-placement of files, which defaults to "C:\Documents and Settings\(user-name)\". Too much stuff ends up in there that does not need to be backed up, and I don't like having to dig down more than a layer or two to point to what I want backed up. So all I back up is C:\My Documents and C:\My Pictures. Everything else comes from the program disc (which I have copies of stored awasy safely) or downloaded updates.

Does anyone here use ThumbsPlus other than me? I've been using this program for years now and can't imagine a program that gives more bang for the buck.
