What a cool thing to do.
Anybody got a busted 70-200 IS to try this on?
Somewhere on the 'net, somebody has disassembled and repaired a 70-200 IS. IIRC, it was a defective IS unit that he changed. I don't remember the link, but I do remember seeing it.
Somebody else mentioned the absence of the DiGICII processor. I'm going to look around more this weekend and see if I can find it. There may be a circuit board or two I haven't pulled the metal shielding off of yet.

Damn that hurts. Looking at that gives me the creepy crawlies. Boy that salt water sure does a number on things doesn't it.
I must be just as big a geek as you though. I have taken dead high tech toys apart to see what makes them tick too.

A Photologist seeks to find how the camera died...I was able to see all your pics without passing out(all the gore without the blood!)
Requiem to your camera
Fascinating display, Gary. Thanks for the 'tour'. It's kind of funny to see the Sony name in the midst of all that Canon hardware, and yes, after looking at all of this I understand why these things cost so much. Sort of.
I've added more photos to the gallery. These are of the Digic chip as well as the front and rear of the circuit board on which it's installed. I've placed them in the series where they belong chronologically. http://www.pbase.com/gmr2048/20d-dissection
Still gotta see what I can get for the other requested shots. Hopefully this weekend.
kinda wierd that the chip in DPR's review says "Digic II", but the one in you pics doesn't eh?...........makes me wonder if we all got what we paid for.
your picture postings are awesome...............let's see you put it all back together..........
Unless I'm missing a bit, it looks like there aren't too many critical parts located in the right grip of the body. They should change the form factor of the next rebel to resemble the AE-1. I'd buy one just because it looks cool.
Look at that corrosion. Wow. Given the condensation threads that are going on now, this is a great resource. True, this is sort of worst case - a salt water dunking, but very instructive to those discussions as well.
