Nice work! Welcome to our thread, let us see more of your images as you capture them. We love posts, especially the "humble" ones. Keep up the good work.
Welcome! If these are your rookie shots I better start looking for another line of work. Great color, action, sharpness. The shot of the Six is wonderful. I put four hours on ours this week and regretted it every time I put it away. What a privilege and a thrill it is to have the opportunity to fly such a great aircraft. I've put a little over 100 hours of "Six" time in my log and I still grin every time she greets me as the hangar door raises. Boy, I wish avgas was still a buck a gallon.
Rodolfo is in Africa with his family, as you know. He's going to be winging his way to AirVenture via O'Hare early next week and when the jet-lag wears off, he's going to pull us together for a pizza or something. I hope I get too see some of you. How many of you are planning to spend some time at aviation Mecca?
Gunny is going to the North American Training Assoc. "FAST" seminar in Iowa for some T-6 formation work. Then he's coming in to AirVenture. The P-38 is in the paint shop, if all goes well "Ruff Stuff" should be making an appearance. Gunny finally got me off the dime on my t-shirt plan and ordered me a couple dozen with a P-51 image I shot last year on the front and a big "JW" on the back, so don't be bashful if you catch a glimpse of me at the show.
I'm getting to know the MKIII and it's one heck of a piece of technology. Truthfully, I think a great deal of the "problems" that have been bandied about is because it is so much more camera than we're used to. That doesn't mean there might not be a problem here and there, and it doesn't mean the people using the MKIII are not competent, talented photographers. My impression so far is that it is so advanced and there are so many custom functions and personal preferences that can be set, that it's going to take some serious time to get up to speed with it. I liken it to transitioning to a much more complex aircraft, you just don't pull it out of the hangar and light it up. I've found some presets that will render less than satisfactory results as far as sharpness, but I know what it's doing and why a particular setting isn't appropriate for certain situations. Over-all, Im very pleased and I'd buy it again, in fact I have! I've been loading up on 16 GB CF and 4GB SD cards in anticipation of OSH and GML. The MKIII with a 16 and a 4 loaded, programmed to shoot RAW + L gives you 880 shots before you have to reload.
Storage and back up continues to be a challenge for us all. My workload requires me to keep all my files "live" because I never know what client will call and ask for an image. Over the years I've developed a system of external drives, all LaCie, and currently all 2TB capacity. I have one set of six mirrored and one set of six striped so it looks like a 12TB single drive. I've continued to diligently follow storage technologies and they are developing rapidly. One company, Wiebetech is at the forefront in that they have an enclosure capable of holding eight 1TB drives and you can configure it in a raid 6 array. The raid six gives you speed and a reasonable margin of safety. Two drives can fail and my data will still be preserved. Doing a raid 6 brings the capacity down to just under 6TB, but the chances of two drives failing in succession is pretty remote. The system has fault notification so you are notified at the first hint of a drive problem. The drives are hot swappable too, so you can put eight drives in, back all the images up, pull them out and load 8 more. You can then store a set of drives off site for safe archiving. Weibetech makes all kinds of systems for back-up and storage with some really neat features. I'm in the process of copying the first four TB of my images to see how well it all works.
Are you guys still awake? Hope to see some of you soon in Wisconsin. My good friend and formation pilot par excellence, Butch Smith and I are flying his King Air 90 up, rough work, but someone needs to do it!
Im up late! Thanks, not my first shots, and not my last, but Im fairly new to the photo world I guess... I love my 30D and the white glass!! Im just a lowly mooney pilot, never flown in a warbird yet.
How should I start? Your post is excellent. Not only excellent they clearly show your skills, patience, timing and great techniques in capturing. Honestly I think you must seriously work to organize an Exhibition with your great collection. Love to see your other photography subjects like architecture. Do not let this thread fade away. It is too good to loose.
WOW, Sri Lanka!! I appreciate your kind comments. I hope we can keep it going for a long time to come. There seems to be a number of new folks finding us lately. I'm sure we'll see a flurry of new images after OSH and then GML. I'll see if I can find a few shots of different subjects to post for you. I'm thinking about creating a Blog of some sort.

Very much so! It's an interesting read to see how a full time pro deals with the huge amount of data generated.
You seem to have done a little introductory course in RAID, but didn't (no offense intended of course) get to the higher level course You're already running RAID 10 (striping and mirroring) with your LaCie set-up.
But erhh ... drives may be hot swappable, that doesn't mean you can just pop in a set of fresh ones. The hot-swap ability is there to fix a degraded array on the fly by swapping out the failing disk. It was never intended to replace a full array like you would swap a DVD.
PM me if I can help you with more techno babble on RAID, enclosures, network attached storage, and so on.
I'm aware of the limitations of hot swapping. At the moment I'm trying to discover why the unit is causing my G5 to freeze and kernal panic. If the tech rep and I don't make a major discovery tomorrow and solve the problem, back it goes. I'm not spending 7K unless this thing works flawlessly.
Thanks for your offer! We'll see how this shakes out.
My MacPro dual core has started freezing with a kernal panic as well - usually at around 6:00 in the morning, every morning. I recently added 2 gigs of ram and am wondering if its fighting with the configuration or if its the new HP printer I just added and the drivers are not right or if the external 500gig HD is giving it fits. Not enough info in the report I send to Apple every morning to figure out what this is - at least for me. But I'm not going back to my 512ke over it!
I just got off the phone with Wiebetech's technical Guru and they are next day shipping me an entirely new set-up just so I don't have to goof around trying to figure out which component is not playing nicely with my G5. That's pretty amazing service! I'll keep you posted.
The front office of a GIV. This one is owned by one of the top, if not "THE" top Hollywood producer. They loaded 50k worth of crystal and silver into the galley as I was wrapping up my all night shoot.
"Ruff-Stuff" should be very photogenic, having come right from the paint shop! I can hardly wait!! Do ya suppose 5 16 GB and 10 8 GB cards, plus a couple of 4 GB SD's is enough? The good thing about my 1Ds MkII is that the buffer acted as a governor on my trigger finger!
