New entry - see below for apologies. Taken last friday night from the door to my appartment in the heart of Paris. Though I must admit - this is a street... Is there a difference between streets and roads? Anyway, I present to you: Rue de Grenelle, Rain:
And now for the apologies: I submitted 'Wasted' which received terrific comments. Alas, hadn't read the rules all too well. It was a picture shot in May in the beautiful southwest of the US. Thought the rule was to submit new material, new as in 'unpublished'. Luckily, somebody reminded me of my error. I'm afraid I had to throw away a nice submission but at least I learned a bit of b&w processing along the way. Again: sincerest apologies.
I love Paris!!! And this is another beautiful conversion. Congrats--thanks for pulling your entry. So many times a great photo that doesn't qualify remains in only to be disqualified later. I, for one, appreciate your candor.
Jane
Thanks Jane. Felt pretty bad about it - all those nice FMers commenting on it and having to pull the rug. Next time I'll make sure to read the rules better!
And you're right: Paris is absolutely fabulous. Beautiful architecture, truckloads of culture and history, a certain romantic atmosphere. On the other hand: it is a BIG city which can be pretty tough to live in. Not all that romantic all the time!
This is SO striking; really a marvelous capture. I really like the tones and textures and in fact everything; just such a great everything overall -- I can even feel the rain.
Best of luck!
Marjorie.
I enjoyed "wasted", but I like this better in almost every way. I even like the slight tilt, which is something that usually bothers me and seems either accidental or falsely "artsy". Here, it seems just right. I'm glad the other entry didn't qualify so that we got to see this one.
Best of luck!
Had planned on doing something like this for a long time and friday night it was raining heavily. Alas, when I got down, raced up because the battery was still in the charger, and got down again, the heavy rain had already gone. Still, the street had retained the right atmosphere and I only had to wait 10 minutes before those two people strolled by.
I'm really glad you like it. So did I. If it evokes memories of old photography books than that makes me happy as that is exactly what I wanted it to be like.
As for the slight slant, Jess... It was there by accident. In fact I'm thinking about returning the 5D to the service center because most of the pictures are slanted just a bit to the right while all my 30D shots are perfectly straight. Still, looking at photos from giants like Cartier-Bresson I decided that striving for perfection isn't necessary to make nice shots. So I decided to leave everything pretty much as is, and just to convert to b&w.
So, thanks everybody! You're making me blush (again).

Emile--what a life!!! Shooting and living in Paris--drool.

I am a big fan of black and white photographs, and this one is excellent. I like it even better than your first post. You have captured, not only an interesting scene, but have also conveyed the mood - a combination for which we should all strive. I hope that you will continue to participate in the WA.
Really wonderful street scene Emile ... absolutely love the B&W treatment and corresponding mood created by it. Paris is a favorite city to visit, so this shot also brings up good memories for me. Also agree with comments about this having an old(er) film-like quality to it. Great capture ... great entry.
