I have been looking on the internet (ebay) at these two bags and I was wondering if anyone has experience with either and the 10d? I would like to get away with getting the 7 but I am afraid it will be to small.
After much deliberation I chose the velocity-9 to carry my 10D, 17-40, 28-135, 450EX and other small accessories. It does this quite well, and the 'velocity' function works quite well - being able to swing the bag around without removing it. The velocity-7 is ok for a 10D and 1 lens, but I think the expansion potential above that is quite limited, the 9 itself is neither big of very generous inside. Go for the 9.
minus-points...
-I'm a little unhappy with the softness of the bag inside, I am thinking of a way to stiffen up the compartments.
-The area underneath the central camera/lens pouch does remains fairly innaccessible, unless you want to dismantle the whole thing each time.
-The 'courier' style diagonal carrying strap takes a liltte getting used to
plus-points...
-using the waist straps, its a very usable cycling companion
-better and faster access to the camera than other back bags I've used.
-doesn't look like its holding loads of expensive gear
I've got the Velocity-9. The 7 is way too small for the 10D and grip. Like Simon, I found the foam pillars that support the camera sag under the 10D's weight (It's fine with my Elan 7E). I prefer the easy access of a shoulder bag but the Velocity combines the comfort of a backpack with about 50% of the accessibility of a shoulder bag. Unlike a shoulder bag, the Velocity-9 doesn't make a good platform for filter or lens changes. When I swing it around to pull the camera out it's really high--near my face--and I find it awkward. I only use it when I bike.
The Velocity-9 is small and only has room for a 10D with normal zoom & grip, telezoom and flash. I could stack a small prime on the flash but stacked dividers are too much trouble. The front pocket is tiny. The modular expansion options are nice: cellphone case, water bottle case, etc., that attach to the side and strap.
I have the Velocity 7, the best bag for me. It takes my 10D, 420EX and the sigma 15-30mm lens attached. And further some space for a the charger. Ideal bag for ''just the camera''.
Further impressed by the build quality from tamrac. But just to frustrating, ever tried to read Tamrac's website and trying to ignore the Trademark signs? These guys virtually TM everything, EasyFlapTM, EasySqueezeTM and so on
So how is having this bag on your back for some time with heavy equipment?
Do you notice the difference with a real backpack or is it about as comfortable?
I'm interested in this bag since I often go cycling with the camera, but I wouldn't like to get back- or shouldertroubles after going out for a day of shooting
Well, I just spent a week with the Velocity 9 pretty much stuffed, and I have two points that would improve the bag:
First, the sling should be redesigned so that you can alternate shoulders - the strap should be removable and reversable so that you can do this, with attachment points for left or right side hanging. 15+ pounds of equipment can feel like 30 after an hour or so of wearing the bag.
Second, I just don't understand why they didn't reverse the lid! Sure, you swing it around, but then as noted earlier in a post, the thing is right in front of your face, and then you have to flip the top up toward you! Sheesh, who missed that one in design? Trying to pull a 10D w/ BG-ED out while wearing the bag is more hassle than it is worth.
So, I just remove it to get things out, which is very quick and easy. Love the bag, but for a little redesign and a couple more bucks (probably) it could be outstanding.
I'm using it with a 10d + Canon 50mm 1.8II + Sigma 15-30mm and a Speedlite 420EX flash. It fits nicely, also the flap to your ''head'' is somewhat unpractical. But further anything i was looking for. I have the Velocity 7 like i said a few posts back.
I managed to stuff my 10D, a 17-40, a 28-135 and 70-200IS into a V7 this weekend. While certainly not ideal it worked in a pinch. I have been carrying it with out the 70-200 for a while and have been very happy.
The velcro really annoys me. I know it is the hot thing to do these days, but I never seems to fit will. Also, if you throw your lens cloth in there it gets shredded. It still isn't the super fast access bag i was hoping for, but at least I am not constantly taking it off like a backpack.
