I'm sorry, but I've still seen much slower films record more grain than your original images here. I just don't see it as the big problem so many folks seem to I guess (I'm not referring to you John, or many others here - anyone who understands noise/grain already realizes it's not the big problem that some seem to think it is). Where I do get a bit ticked is when people say that the camera (no matter what brand or model) isn't any good at "this" or "that" setting because of noise or whatever. If this was 20 years ago, I guess they'd be saying the same thing about Ektachrome or Cibachrome being no good because it's too grainy. Yet, some of the most memorable images in history have been recorded on "grainy" film, and have become classics despite (or, maybe because of!) grain. Why do we need "plastic" images today just because we've gone digital. Maybe grain/noise "shouldn't" be there, but just because it is doesn't make the image or the camera no good. Far from it! People snapping pictures "can't deal with it" it would seem, and declare the camera or film no good (at least at those speeds). Photographers get the shot anyway, and make the grain/noise work FOR them. There's a big difference there I suspect.
John, great effect you've achieved, I love the grain, and the kid is cute as a button!
The image has a vintage look, reminiscent of high ISO film. Nice job!

Best,

thanks SJ
the neat thing about the D2h is I had to do nothing to the files at all, a super camera for so many things really
Good thing I like grain, because I still shoot mostly film! In fact, shooting digital is really my way of avoiding the film scanner - a major time sink.
hehe , I hear ya Rico, I refuse to ever scan anything again if I can help it. Thanks God for digital, else I would never ever have gotten into photography in the first place
I love that picture , the guy looks like he is glowing , one of the nice things about the real fast glass is the effects like these that are totally unanticipated at the time of capture
I'm too late for the guessing so I'm putting up a Velvia shot that shows even ISO 50 can show grain..
Nice shots of a cute little guy. I too can sense his enthusiasm for wonder and mischief in that face. Reminds me of someone my mother knew about 44 years ago.
Great photo John. I love the expression. My guess it was a film scan but then peeked. I agree that grain isn't bad and fortunately we can now dial it in at will by changing ISO values without changing whole rolls. I wouldn't want a camera that was sterile clean through all values.

Well, I wouldn't say so much spoken like a Nikon shooter as opposed to spoken like a photographer.
Unfortunately a lot of folks have become obsessed with particular little nuances and seem to forget the overall 'picture'.
It's also unfortunate that the pp'ers amd mb'ers just don't have a 'clue' about what photography is all about.
Also unfortunate that the perception is that most of them seem to gravitate toward one brand, which gives those that use that brand and know what they are doing, a slightly poorer reputation in the minds of many of those who don't use that brand.
I agree that it's a great time to be a photographer again. It was the advent of digital that got me back into it after a long hiatus.

Of course you are right on all points TJ, and you know me well enough to know it is Always in fun that I speak like this. All of us have gripes about our gears , the better shooters just take it as one more challenge inside the system of our choosing and get on with business, the less talented come over to argue and start pi$$ing contests
Man Allen, I hate you - that was my idea ... and you beat me to it
I've been looking for a picture of wheat or some kind of grain since I read the title ... oh well too late
I think we will stop this obsession with grain free images once it's no longer a challenge. We will probably get a "grain" feature put in as an option then - so we can make our images look better in camera without the bother of post!
You think that there will be a sentimental reverence for the D2h one day ... kinda like for Tri-X?
