I am not sure if this has been discussed but the canon 5d E-s screen is not very impressive. The equivalent canon screens for the 1D cameras are much better. Mark
Do you mean the Ee-S?
The equivalent 1D screen (Ec-S) hasn't been released yet, as far as I know. Or do you have one already? And if so, where'd ya get it!
Someone had mentioned that BrightScreen would be coming out with a combination split screen / micropism AND the grid or crop markings. All I saw on their site was the split screen microprism screens OR the crop screens. Is the combo with crop marks down the pipe?
Thanks,
Jon
Ask Brightscreen about it. They can do the etching themselves . . so they can add any crop marks to any screen that they already have (or one that you have, for that matter).

it's on the page.....optional crops available excluding grids $40 additional each... .http://www.brightscreen.com/5d.html

Note that my previous comment about Brightness was referring to their old "Brightscreen", not the "Proscreen".
At the time, they only had "Brightscreens" available for the 1-series cameras. These were Canon stock screens that they had modified.
The "Proscreen" is one that they manufacture themselves (or they get it from somebody besides Canon, anyway). I don't know how well (or not) these work.
Split-focus rings work extremely well for manual focus . . . provided that you have an obvious "line" where you want to focus on your subject. The line on the subject will be "broken" if you're not in focus, and will be perfectly joined when you are in focus.
For subjects that don't have such obvious "lines" in them (or at least not at the right focal plane), the micro-prism often works better. Though I've found that the micro-prism isn't quite as easy to get perfectly accurate. However, if you've mounted the camera on a tripod, then the microprism can be deadly accurate . . as it appears (with careful scrutiny) as a whole bunch of horizontal and vertical split-focus rings . . and the image in the viewfinder will look "jumbled up" if you're not in focus. But this requires extreme concentration, and I can't do it when the camera isn't on a tripod. Well, I can get close, but not dead perfect.
Microprisms have a tendency to not go clear when lenses slower than 2.8 are used. This is often worse with microprism collars around split image centers than with a central microprism only. Since the Brightscreen has such a large microprism collar this would be a concern for me. How does this screen do in that regard?
Good question. I can say that the Canon microprism screen (and Canon's one with the microprism collar) never seemed to go completely clear for me, even with f/2.8 lenses. I don't think I tried them with fast primes, though.
I did notice, though, that they were also quite sensitive to exactly where my eye was on the viewfinder. The closer to dead-center I was aligned, the clearer they would look. It became problematic for me, as I wear glasses, and tend to get "off center" because of that. Probably why the eye-controlled focus on the EOS-3 never worked well for me, either.

Hi Butch,
To my eyes the microprism is usable thru f4. The split image is OK up through f8 in bright sunlight, less in room light. It does vary with eye position though.
I concur. I ordered both the Ee-S and Ee-D screens. Kept the Ee-D, which I am using, and promptly returned the Ee-S screen. Now waiting for some reviews of the Brightscreen, and for the release of the Katz Eye version, hopefully next month.

As others have said, you can order the crop mark or grid lines as an add-on for $40. The crop marks would be OK I guess if you like the 8 x 10 format, but think twice before you opt for the grids. I had one with the 1/3 grid lines and didn't like it because it's annoying - the lines are too black and thick/fat ... for me. I am happy with the Ee-D grids as the lines are more subtle and therefore less distracting.

May I suggest looking through the finder, working out which way the screen needs to be moved (everything's back to front) and then releasing and lowering the carrier, and grasping the tab of the screen with the tool and slightly moving the screen in the desired direction? If you are successful, the circles will be centred perfectly.
This method doesn't work with my combination. I can align the screen if the carrier is released but it moves back out of alignment as the carrier is latched. I will say though that its consistent. I tried it about a dozen times and it went back to the same misaligned position each time.

At the time of my last correspondence with BrightScreen they weren't offering the 1/3 grid on the 5D screen because the lines would cross the area of the micro-prism.

I think you can get the grid lines if you order either of these 5D screens from them.

Much obliged - their web page could use some work...
I'll be getting one of these after my wallet starts growing again after Christmas... ;-)

Here's the reply email I got from Brightscreen:
"Alignment varies slightly between different 5d bodies but can be adjusted.
There should not be any smudges unless the screen has been handled.
No custom functions have been found to date to be needed. The defaults functions have been tested not requiring other settings."
I definitely did not handle the screen except for using the tool to touch the tab only. I will try to adjust the screen position and see how I like using this for a few days.

Peter
I did not get an opportunity to yesterday to see if I can get it better aligned. Too busy at work. Today will be a free lunch and I'll will probally get out early So may try today.
Tomorrow will definately be a workout for the screen.
And for those who have never used split screen, the probally is nothing better for manual focus.
