Peter,
I am glad to see it works for you on the 5D. That is a very good news.

See folks here is one positive note on the issue of using a manual focus lens on the 5D.

I absolutely agree with you Guy, the Canon 1Ds has made great mark in the history of digital SLR. Canon EF mount is big and the flange distance is the thinnest in the market for us to use so many great lens on them before even trying out Contax and Leica cameras. I know some of us benefit from Canon digital SLR and the flexibility that it gave us to test out so many different brand name lens. The result of trying out these lens has gave some solution to the problem that digital sensor present especially on Full Frame sensor and Chromatic Aberration. What makes it so exciting is that we all have the chance to use these great optics when Leica did not have the DMR and Contax RTS camera has no digital answer for their devoted users.

i'm glad someone finally said that.   all i've heard lately is that the 5D is the ultimate solution to everyone's photography needs and that the 1Ds suddenly became an antiquated p.o.s. upon its release.   i gotta laugh at that.

Son, are you shooting film with the Contax 645, or do you have a digiback?

Im tired of canon. They dont allow focus ack for their cameras without Canon lenses.
Now they make difficult to adapt 3rd parties wide angle lenses without providing valid alternatives. I dont know, but probably i can consider to move to other brand

Robert,
I shoot film and renting the MF digital back. This way I can use all of the great lens from Carl Zeiss and Leica 35mm lens to Carl Zeiss medium format autofocus lens with true 16 bit CCD digital sensor and no AA filter.

The best lens in the world with highest MTF and beautiful bokeh belong to Zeiss and Leica 35mm lens. Thus, you get the highest resolving signal per file size. This is applicable during a time when you sending out to get print and the file size has a limit.

This is the reason why Guy loves his Leica lens and was disappointed to not being able to use it on his newly acquired 5D without any modification. I can understand why he choose not to modify his optics. I am glad to see the information is availble here for all of us who might be interested in the 5D. One thing about FM forum is that when it comes to something like this Guy and other FMers are the first to address and to inform the rest. We all should appreciate the valuable information.

Paoletto,
As much as I like to move away from Canon completely but I cannot. The reasons that I will remain with Canon are:

1) High ISO capability
2) Their digital SLR cameras are getting very cheap to use as a backup with full frame capability.
3) Fast auto focus when I need it especially in the telephoto range.
4) Very high optics design in the telephoto range
5) Image stabilization

I guess you can say Canon has corner me to their market.

As I've recently stated before, there is an 'Other Digital Systems' forum on the drawing board, though I don't know the timetable for it. There will be no dedicated Leica forum here at FM.com, but hopefully soon there will be a place to discuss Leica, Pentax, Olympus, MF digital, exotic lenses on 'other' camera bodies, etc.

With the popularity of the Leica and CZ lenses (especially the wides) on 1DS and 1DsII, do you think Canon intentionally made changes to the 5D design to discourage (prohibit??) their use? Just a thought.

I would like to see that. As much as I respect these "exotic" glass users and thier input, at times it seems a bit out of place on the Canon forum. I mean, how many times do we have to be told how lousy our Canon glass is compared to a Leica? We got the point and we know that if we want "the best" we have to change our equipment. The fact of the matter is is that many of us don't really care about "the best" We are satisfied with what we have, thank you.

As I have said many times, the most beloved photos our families have and society in general has were not (and never will be) shot with "the best" equipment, because photography is way more about content and substance than equipment. Having good equipment is important, having "the best" is not.

true enough, john - but the one disadvantage i can think of, in not discussing zeiss, oly, leica glass on the canon forum (as it relates to canon bodies) is that many folks (like me a while back) would not get introduced to the whole concept....

I believe that a large segment of the people that are here talking about Zeiss/Oly/Leica lenses on Canon bodies are and will remain big Canon fans. The bottom line is that Canon makes great gear...both cameras and lenses.

Because the Canon mount accepts other lenses with the use of adapters, there are those among us, however, that like to experiment to see what a Canon body and alternative lens scenario produces. Some of the results are fantastic and some are very forgettable.

If this was a topic that didn't interest a number of people emotionally and financially invested in Canon gear, this thread would be on page 5 by now. And, don't worry, it'll eventually get there.

We get a little provencial here Jeff. This is by far the most interesting board (I am sure the regulars here will agree) and so here we are. I mean who wants to look at pigeons, trees, bugs or fat brides all day long (even if if they are Leica shots)

Apparently often

I know how you feel John. I don't mind hearing about other/3rd party gear but I don't like feeling inferior all the time.

I just tried my Leica 21-35mm with Fotodiox adapter on my new 5D.
It works at 22mm with no shadow. It hits with error 99 at 21mm though.
A 22-35mm works for me. It still blows away the EOS 17-40mm or 16-35mm.

My Contax 28mm, 35-70mm and 28-85mm all work fine!!
