[The Mirror:
I am not sure what they constructed the mirror from, but perhaps it is lead. I must stress that I am NOT exaggerating when I say that you can feel the camera move when the mirror hits the upper stops. You can feel it jump in your hand. Is this a problem? Certainly not. Was I expecting it? Certainly not. You would most definitely need to use mirror-lockup when taking longer exposures.
The Shutter Sound:
I hate it. I realize that the 20D is over-loud and clacky sounding, but the 5D sounds like a wet blanket. flump flump.
The Shooting Speed:
I am spoiled by the 20D's 5fps, and going back to 3fps felt slow. And oddly, it wasn't evenly timed. It went flump... flump........flump....flump...flump.......flump
Does any of that matter? Nope.
yeah, I've run something like 40,000 frames through my 10D and that paragraph sounds pretty familiar! Especialy the flump.... flump.... flump..flump..flump..! Except on the 10D it's all too often flump..flump..flump..BUFFER....................................................
reasons not to use a 10D in continuous mode.
cheers,
john

Etadam,
Of course it is not actually made of lead, silly person. But you can feel it thump, which I cannot feel on my 20D, which of course, has a smaller mirror.
Can anyone who has a 1Ds tell me if this behavior is the same? Can you feel the mirror hitting the stops? Does it move the camera?
EDIT:
oops, thanks wslam for answering my question!

It is a known fact... however the manufacturer should deal with this problem - as said above Nikon implemented a counter-balance mechanism to prevent the camera from moving...
Canon (and Leica, Minolta, and even Sigma) already has counter-balances to do just that, some more or less effective. The 1 series cameras have very effective counter-balances, comparable to the Nikons (I've owned some version of every pro Nikon body from F2 to D1). I can't comment on the 5d because I haven't seen it. But if it has the cheap plastic feel of the 10d and 20d, I wouldn't be surprised if there is a pretty noticeable vibration from mirror slap. My 20D has more noticeable mirror slap than my 1ds2, despite a smaller mirrror.

I was pretty sure the top Canon's had counter balances. There's no way Canon would neglect something small like that.
Pondria:
The AF seemed identical to the 20D, as far as I could tell.
I know it has new 'invisible' focus points, used for servo mode, but I didn't take any shots in that mode.

I cannot feel any mirror slap at all on my 20D. I do also disagree with your assessment that the 20D feels like 'cheap plastic'. It is a metal body, just like your overpriced 1Ds Mk II.
Incidentally, I think can get access to the 5D again, if anyone has any specific issues they would like me to evaluate.
