Fascinating lens this one. I've played with this a couple of times under supervision of the CPS guys from time to time over the years.
Being such a rare beast, it would be interesting to discuss who's using it and why. There is only one copy of this lens in Australia of which I am aware (owned by Canon Australia). I know that Sports Illustrated has a couple and there would be maybe a dozen more scattered around the other Canon regional centres.
Anyone with any personal experience or interesting information (including pics in the field) please reply.
one example from me: this lens usually could be seen on St. Peters place in Rome at the front of St. Peter cathedra during Pope speeches... he used to speak from window high above the ground... so photographers used it even with 2x TC
I thought there is a FM user who uses it shooting Drag races. I don’t know his username.
At SportsShooters.com there is also an 1200mm user. You can see a picture of him at the "Post Pics of Canon In ACTION" threat.

I believe it! I was there a few weeks ago. An Italian PJ next to me was shooting with a Sigma 300-800 and a stacked 1.4x and 2x. He's quite far away so you definitely need the extra focal length.
Isn't this an $80,000 lens? The Canon rep in my area said he know Oakley owned one, and he only heard of two more being purchased. Was he yanking my chain, or is this price tag correct? He said $40,000 down, and Canon will start building the lens.
This is just a thought but... the Oly 350 f/2.8 on an E-1 has a FOV 700mm, tack on a 2x converter and you have a 1400mm f/5.6? The whole setup = 3.5k...

On the Canon museum site, the original price was 9,800,000 yen, which is (currently) $86k. However, they don't seem to hold their value too well - I recall seeing on the web a used one sell in the $20's. Unfortunately, Canon discontinued this lens a few months ago!

Well, using this lens and a 2x converter on a 20D body (MF of course) would give you 3800mm equiv. Stack another 1.4x converter, and you're at 5400mm f/16...
I think that's something of a beast reserved for occasions like the pope of carefully crafted assasinations of a well known political leader.

I saw one for sale for $110,000 a couple years ago.
I dont know how true this is anymore, but Canon used to bring a few of them to the Super Bowl and would lease/lend them to the big sports news groups for the day.

I owned one, but after testing it against the Zeiss equivalent, I sold the Canon and kept the Zeiss.
Zeiss has a 1200mm How much does that puppy go for?
