While it certainly does limit movement, it is perhaps not quite so bad as you might think in that regard. It is rather cleverly designed with gimbals, clamps and expandable rods.
Other manufacturers, Kirk specifically, made a similar "forth leg" years ago, at a much greater cost. They dropped it.
I find it very useful for bird "portraits." Obviously "in flight" work is not done with it. :>))

I've got that same contraption - it's effective for me with the 1-series camera and teleconverters hanging off the end of the 300/4 where the 322RC2 grip mount is stressed and allows a bit of vibration. I use the rod to stabilize the camera.
The downside is that it isn't very fast for changing positions. A bigger head is a better solution (and a bit more expensive) for that, but it might come with a weight penalty.
Just joined the forum so why not post a few pics of my friend and I in action:
Here I am up in Kansas stormchasing last year...pre-digital:

Here are a couple of my friend at the same waterfall in Colorado. I took them with my 20D and 17-40, he is holding a 20D with that same kit lens:

Then in this post, that is me with the boonie hat on, and down the list that is Todd Corzett (FM member), me, Robin Thompson, Rick Dole, and Regis Lefebure, excluding myself, some of the whos, who in sportscar photography. Good stuff.

oh man! if i had only known...i was hoping to meet some fellow FMer's out there. i was really eyeing some of the long glass people were carrying around. for all i knew, we were probably in the media center at the same time. the photogs i did talk to were all pretty nice but i was too reserved to ask them who they were...didn't want anyone to think i was a nut or anything
Here in Niagara Falls, it's very rare to find someone without a camera. I'm going to go against the grain and post a photo of a Nikon in action. I'm sure I'll find some Canons, but for today this was the best I can do. On weekends there's always plenty of L series glass, and on occasion I can find a large-format camera.
The guy in the background might be using a Canon at least I took a picture of a guy taking a picture of a guy taking a picture of the Falls...
