I8MP IS a worthwhile improvement over 6 --If YOU NEED IT. --Some people are happy with 1.5 MP thumbnail images produced by mobile phones.
12 MP is yet another improvement --while much more than 16 MP shows up lens limitations with current 35 MM Lens design so it might be metter to look at Medium Format for cameras with larger than 16 MP..
A larger file gives you many more possibilities --including cropping to fit the most popular print sizes -- a 6MP camera will start showing it's limitations at around A4 size unless your shot is absolutely 100% spot on and you have the print processed professionally on a lightjet or similar with sophisticated hardware RIP software for ressing up your file.
For Newspaper work yes 6 MP is fine but for fine artwork you'd be laughed off the face of the planet with the file sizes produced by a 6MP camera.
As always it's what YOU shoot that counts --and if 6MP is enough so be it --but to say you can't see the need for 8 MP over 6 --well it's not huge in mathematical terms but it DOES make a difference.
I did the maths for 8 over 6 and found that at 150dpi (I think 150 is optimal for printing), 6 megapixels gives me a print of 13.3 x 20 and 8 megapixels gives me a print of 23 x 15.4. On the face of it, that's not a great advance - 2 inches by 3 increase.

As long as it is something that will drive down the current prices, I don't mind.
I would love to see a 15-50 2.8L. Canon are way, way behind Nikon in the WA department, who have had the 18-70 2.8 for a while already.
That might be because Canon and Nikon both build their pro lenses for their pro bodies. In Canon terms, that is 1.3X (really 1.25X) and full-frame. For Nikon, it is the 1.5X APS-C format.
BTW, I believe you might be referring to the either the Nikon 17-55 f/2.8 (APS-C) or the Nikon 18-70 f/3.5-4.5 zoom (also APS-C). Of the two, only the former is a pro-level lens.
The 17-55 f/2.8 lens on a 1.5X sensor yields the equivalent field of view of a 25-80 mm lens, very similar to Canon's 24-70 on its 1-series cameras.
for next camera i dont care about megapixels and sensor crop (1.6x is okey for me), all i want is bigger viewfinder & add some more focus point, come on Canon, N...N can make crop camera with big viewfinder why cant you... (not to mention 1x and 1.3,what i meant is on 1.6x crop factor)
my reason is I think most of people who arent sportshooter that upgrade from 1.6 (20D) to 1.3 (1D mk2) is simply because of larger viewfinder & 45 focus points
