Hello All. I've been trying to find information on these two flashes. I know the MZ-4 is an update of the MZ-3, but I can't figure out what's been updated. Do both of them support E-TTL on the Canon??
Yes.
The MZ-4 does e-ttl2 (350XT and 20D)
Many folks use the flash is auto mode, not e-ttl. I have only played a bit with mine, and e-ttl works for me (so far). I have had the MZ4 about 2 or 3 weeks - got it used with a LS2 and 3102 shoe for $300. You need the 3102 shoe to get e-ttl on a canon camera. The standard shoe, 301, will give you all the other modes.
You can find an MZ3 used more easiely than the 4 as folks are getting the latest and greatest. I have no idea why the seller was selling my unit - as she repalced with it with a 550ex and a lightshpere...
I have not read enough to know what the real difference between ttl/ttl2 is - I know ttl2 uses the lens' ablility to relay the distance of the subject back to the camera's flash brain - and not all lenses (not even all canon's lenses) are equipped to do this.So ettl-2 will not work across the board. But this is where i get confused - the AF system should be the distance measuring tool - the lens focal length is already taken into account as the 54 (and 550/580 canon flashes) have auto zoom heads, and the flash is cut as soon as sufficient exposure is acheived. Unless it is an attempt to stop overlighting a close subject i'm not sure what benefit this has, and of course it has none if you are bouncing the light.
