p.1 #1 · My 5 lens 50mm f2.8 shootout

3 big pics, stand back...

At the risk of needing to change my name to "brickshooter"...
I compiled my test shots of 5 lenses I own or have owned recently.
100% crops, Canon 20D, RAW, timer, mirror lockup, PSCS ACR white balance only,

They are, from left to right:
Canon EF 50mm MK1 f1.8
Tamron 28-75 XR f2.8
Sigma 18-50 EX f2.8
Canon EF 28-70 f2.8L
Canon EF 17-40 f4L (not really fair as it's at 40 and f4, but why not)

Nice brick.
Which is the best in your opinion?

what no 50 f1.4 or 18-55 ef-s...

Test is flawed flawed I SAY!!!!!

nice. I'm suprised at how well the tamron stacks against the 28-70 and the 17-40.

The leftmost column of images is mislabeled "Canon EF 28mm." It should say "Canon EF 50mm."

I'm surprised the 50 didn't perform better. It almost looks misfocused to me.

Thanks Russ, fixed it.

The way I do it is to set it all focusing point and hit the shutter until I get as many lit as possible then repeat until the result doesn't change. The I switch to MF and shoot the aperture series. But yes, it does look OOF.

BTW, the 70-200 I sold you is still the king of the brick tests

That's good... Persian-Rice will be glad to hear that. (I sold it to him.)

Thanks for the post jmardy, it's the first time I've seen all those lens results side by side.

I think the 28-70 L is the sharpest, but darn if the Tamron doesn't hold it's own quite well...you have cured my lens envy (I have the Tamron)

I've done these before and know what a PITA they can be. Thank you for your efforts. I wish the 50mm F1.4 had been in the line-up - very curious to see how it would have stacked up.

The 28-70L stole the show! I don't think the 24-70L I had awhile back would have done nearly that well.

These were all at f2.8? (except for the 17-40 I assume). What about at f5.6?

The Tamron does rather well here doesn't it

jmardy :

Since you can see the true color of the brick,
Which do you think rendered the color better ?
The Tamron 28-75 or the Canon 28-70 ?
And were they taken at the same time of day ?
One last thing are they all at the same zoom level ?

They both look equally sharp to me.

This is great. I've been saying it for a long time - the Tamron might be as sharp as the 28-70L or 24-70L, but the colors are not even close.

I just might do a small test later this week between my 2 35L's and my 24-70 if any one is in interested.

Thanks for your efforts with this.

Thanks for the test, jmardy. If we were within a striking distance I would loan you my 50mm macro to be included in the next round of test...

Do I read that correctly? You have two 35L's ?

This is not quite a scientific way to test the lens.
Even Jmardy would admit that !

The reason I ask him the above questions are for him to give an opinion on the best color rendition. The L lenses do have wonderful saturated color, thats for sure. But I am also getting very good color rendition on the Tamron.

Jmardy can see the brick where hes at, since he uses them to test a lot of his lenses. Let him tell us which is closest in his opinion before we go off saying which has the truer color rendition. I'm not stating the Tamron is a L lens, but mine beat my old 24-70 L hands down in my test.

The best way is to be sure is verify your white balance is correct for all the shots. Lighting should be identical, verified by a light meter. Focal lengths, and aperatures must be identical. Also use the same AF Point(S) on each test.

Jmardy did a fine job ! Just not in the best situation.
I think its great he did what he did ! Even using this method it give all of us a general idea of how one compares to the other.

Thanks Jmardy !

Wow, the Canon 50 and the Sigma make me feel like I need a new prescription. Am really quite surprised by the Canon 50 after everything I'd heard about it, and the Tamron is really a standout, but you have just doubled my "L" envy with that 28-70.

Hmmm....where's my piggy bank?

Good test..thnx.

The 28-70L really stole the show IMHO... Just the contrast and saturation on that one is worth it. I have this lens and it is one of my oldest lenses. Never upgraded to the 24-70L...

Yes, all at 2.8
If y'all really care I'll post a set at:
(pick one)
f4
f8
f11

yes, Tamron was a winner.

Hi Curt.
Yes, I will be the first to admit that these are unscientific tests and were originally just for me. I did try to remove as many variables as possible.
I shot them at different times, with different light, but I shot them RAW and used ACR to adjust color balance by clicking on the center of the white tape arrow.

Honestly, the Canon 28-70 makes the brick look richer and more sautrated than it really is. It is closer in color to the other four (does that make any sense?)
