When I heard there was a nor'easter off the coast of Long Island I headed to Nickerson Beach as I knew there would be big waves and that the sun would do magical things to the waves and spray at sunset. I arrived about an hour before sunset and found American Oystercatchers, Sanderling Sandpipers, Dunlin Sandpipers, and lots of gulls. I started to photograph them paying attention to the places they liked to feed and as the sun went down limned up so that I could have the sun in or just outside of my frame. Choosing subjects very close to the sun as it reached the horizon gave me a bright orange yet a frame or two width over and I got all sorts of pretty pastels. I observed the ways my lens was creating bokeh from the spray from the waves and then worked on using both the lovely out of focus forms as well as the specular highlights in my compositions. It was pure joy working in such conditions.
Comments and suggestions welcome,
Morris
