You know you can turn IBIS off in the menu and forget about it, right? And you know you can set a minimum shutter speed with or without IBIS, right? All the purported downsides of IBIS you cite, bar the frankly forgettable up to ~100g difference it might add, are moot, because you can, guess what... turn it off in the menu! Your faster processor, as you state a prerequisite for IBIS, is now free to save and playback images even faster, and your beefier battery can now take more shots on a charge.
I'll say it again. The lack of IBIS in the fp line is not a practical decision, not for video nor stills. It is pure ideology. They just want to be able to call their latest fp line the smallest full frame body on the market. That is why it is missing, and it is why we must either settle for a different body in this segment (the only other option with the L mount currently being the S9) or just live with the limitations (*especially* in the case of the fp L where you really want to be shooting 1 / 4*f or faster!)....Show more →
Your lack of technical understanding is really amazing, harping on about IBIS without knowing how it actually works.
Just because an IBIS is OFF, it still needs to draw POWER at all times to keep the sensor in its central position. You can even hear the sensor dropping down as it is turned off.
As I said, besides actually Developing an IBIS system from the ground-up (main challenge), it also requires a thorough redesign and rethink of the whole camera, the more you add in without adding in size, the more you might need to take out or limit elsewhere.
Panasonic Always had IBIS in their L-mount full-frame cameras, initially quite big ones, and it took them quite some time to get to a point, where they could shrink it down enough for an S9.
But: not yet with a partially stacked sensor and it's increased feature set, which would definitely increase overheating a fair bit.
Initial testing suggests an FP2 can last for about 30 minutes indoors shooting 4k60p FF oversampled, pretty respectable for its size, but it's housing has been designed to dissipate heat. This sensor is just about capable to do this also in open gate mode, but this function has been understandably disabled.
Now. We can imagine how much Worse would it perform outdoors and with IBIS, it would be way more detrimental to its usability for its intended audience.
It's not Just the smallest full-frame camera. It's also one of the more powerful hybrids out there. A Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K is much bigger, doesn't have this much power in it (yet). Only for video. Of course it started to become cheaper again.
Let's maybe stay on the ground, look at this camera in its entirety, and try to somewhat understand what Sigma is doing right now, and how they are progressing in the future. If they make this camera's software function bug-free in the coming months and tweak some features to be more user-friendly, that will be a great achievement in itself.
They've hinted at more functional cameras in the future, so a Sigma camera With IBIS is not out of the question (definitely not at this size). Let's just try and appreciate where they are now and give them time, while they also develop their lens line-up.
Or keep harping about IBIS and anyone not using it (Leica M users, DSLR users, film users) being an idiot as well.
The other point about this that you don't (yet) understand at all is living with limitations isn't the most terrible thing. Just means that you are more Aware of what you Can and Can't do instead of fantasizing about as many settings as you can adjust and relying on the camera as much as possible when it's only a tool.
