p.1 #1 · Fujifilm workflow vs Sony

My photography journey has me revisiting old paths. I started with Sony (original A7), then jumped to Fujifilm (X-Pro1, T3, XH-2), I'm currently back with Sony (a7cii) and I am now questioning going back to Fuji. Each brand's intrinsic strength have me pulled at one point or another. I am cherish the SOOC colors from my fuji images but I love the sharpness of the Sony images.
I detest editing images short of a minor crop or a little contrast bump. I am wondering what your workflows look like. Do you find the need to sharpen or denoise your Fuji images or do you spend more time editing your sony colors?

It doesn't really matter which brand - since I am shooting RAW and edit all my images in Lightroom. The Adaptive Color Profile in LR works great on both brands and often is enough for a pleasing image. For me, there is no difference in how I work on files from either brand in post.

Jumping back and forth between brands can be a distraction from photography. Fortunately, you should be able to get excellent images these days on whatever system you choose to use.

Unless you are printing quite large or you need that smallest possible system, for most purposes that differences in things like sharpness and resolution and colors don’t really amount to all that much.

If you don’t like post-processing, then just pick whatever gives you the straight-out-of-camera (SOOC) results you like and stick with it.

I regard post-processing as being an equal component of making photographs, just as important as decision made at the time of exposure — in fact, the two aspects work in concert. I adjust colors and sharpen (and do other things) to my image files, regardless of brand or format.

I use Sony and Fuji systems concurrently. My workflow from start to finish is the same regardless of what camera is used.

I made LR presets for my Fuji files that were small tweaks by recipe so that I could retain the JPEG colors and make a quick, if not fully automated on import, "final pass".

I've now done the same thing for my Nikon JPEGs.

I’ve been using Canon and Fujifilm concurrently for a dozen years. Aside from a few subtle things (most of which matter even less now than they used to) I use the same workflow for both systems, too. (I sometimes make subtly different sharpening settings, but that’s only in edge cases.)

Obsessing over which gear offers the sharpest images would take the fun out of photography for me.
Personally, I find the process of setting up and taking the shot to be more enjoyable than the result.

My workflow is the same regardless of camera system. I have dedicated presets for each however. With those presets any difference in sharpness or color between Nikon, Fuji and Sony is moot to the point of being essentially indistinguishable.

Given you detest editing, I assume you shoot jpeg and use them as is out of camera? Next, given you prefer Sony’s sharpness but Fuji’s colors, my advice is to try tweaking your internal camera jpeg recipes, increase the sharpening and add a bit of clarity on the Fuji’s —where clarity will slow down Fuji’s write speed— and adjust color hue and saturation on the Sony. After that keep whichever gives you the best of both to your eyes.

Or, you could learn to embrace editing, shoot in raw, build a desirable preset for each camera that renders the color and sharpness you want and apply it to whichever cameras file you happen to be working with, and now either system will work for you.

Note: with a good preset and a little basic knowledge, I can turn a folder full of raws into a separate folder full of ready-to-go, all the same size jpegs with a few button pushes — and it all happens pretty fast.

BTW, a hint for those who hate editing — or maybeY more than one hint:

1. You probably are not getting the maximum value out of your expensive, advanced camera anyway, so it may not be worth worrying a lot about small differences among options.

2. If lots of other people are getting good results from the system you use, then issues may not be with the system — perhaps more likely technique or settings you use.

3. If you want the benefits of raw files but don’t like doing a lot of editing, you can shoot raw and let your raw conversion software (like Lightroom) do what the camera does — rely on software presents and/or automatic settings.
