I have recently seen on other forums people asking about the quality of the 28-400 f4-8. I have used it a lot as a walk around lens and often been surprised by the quality results. Sure, it is not a fast lens and obviously is not going to beat a $$$$ prime. But the results are more than usable, and with a little post production can really pop. The len's range is fantastic and its center sharpness really good with the edges and corners softening up. It has good close focus as well. Just wondering if anyone agrees..

I love mine. When I can't go out with big lens, this is handy.
It's an excellent lens FL between 28-70. After that very good especially at 400mm
Z8 and NIKKOR Z 28-400mm f/4-8 VR @ 1/800sec, f8.0, ISO 5600, 45MP(8256X5504), FL 290mm, Effective FL 290mm, Distance 78ft
I love mine, especially with my Z50ii.
I know my Z7 would give me the same as many pixels when cropped but it would be far behind on the AF.
The old AF-S 28-300 served me well by the Z 28-400 is better all round.
I treat it as an f8 zoom. It's awesome to have 28-400mm in a single lens if the lighting is good. I have been using it less lately after picking up the 24-200mm f6.3 to go with my ZF. But I am keeping it for when I need 400mm.
Personally, I would like to see Nikon make some more premium super zooms. Give us a bit better IQ, lens coatings, AF speed, and a faster aperture in return for a larger and more expensive lens. A 20-200mm f5.6 VR or 24-400mm f6.3 VR would be perfect for me. I would probably end up with both.
I don't think it can be beat as a walk around lens that is capable of great shots. A little soft round the edges and your bokeh is what you should expect for a f4-8 lens. Still OK though. Now, if it was a 24-400..........😎
