I spent some time at the lion exhibit at the Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita, Kansas. This lioness was positioned in a location with a distant background...which helped the portraits. I used various combinations with Nikon Z9 and the the Nikon 400 2.8 TC -- 400mm, 560mm (with the 1.4x TC engaged) and 800mm (with a 2x TC attached and not engaging the internal TC).
1- This first one is with the Nikon 70-200 2.8 S, though--sometimes a little more space helps
2- Nikon 400mm 2.8 TC with the 2x TC...so lens is 800mm 5.6. I stopped down to f/7.1.
3- Nikon 400 2.8 TC with the internal 1.4x TC engaged...so the lens is a 560mm f/4. I shot this wide open.
4- Nikon 400 2.8 TC...shot at that focal length wide open
5- Nikon 400 2.8 TC with internal 1.4x engaged...so 560mm at f/4
Beautiful portraits of a majestic creature, Glenn. Are you pretty happy with the 800mm combo? I wonder if using the built-in 1.4x combined with an external 1.4 offers any better IQ than just the 2x?

Thanks Ross...I've been pleased with the performance of the lens with the 2x. And I have never been satisfied enough to use a 2x converter at all until now. I have seen various tests which claim that the 2x with the 400 2.8 provides better image quality than if two (the internal and external 1.4x) teleconverters are stacked with the 400 2.8. I probably should perform my own tests since I have both teleconverters.
