A sampling of shots I took this weekend at the Rose City Airfest in Tyler, TX. They were supposed to have an F-4 Phantom II but it had to cancel at the last minute due to engine issues...a total bummer, it's always been my favorite jet, but they promise it'll headline next year if they can get it running right.
This was my first full airshow with the 180-600 as my main action lens. I did a little tarmac shooting with an upcoming Viltrox as well. I have typically shot these shows with the 100-400 bare or with the 1.4x on, so it was super nice to have that extra reach at all times here. It's incredibly hard to track a plane moving at 500mph through the viewfinder at 600mm, though!!
I got a few slower shutter speed shots while panning to get some prop blur, and I was impressed with how sharp we were at 600mm all things considering.
Nice work Scott! Unfortunately the Phantom situation is one that is likely to continue to play out. They were hoping for a big roll out at Wings Over Houston in a couple of weeks. Keeping that beast in the air is a monumental task. I've heard that there could be a dusk static shoot involving the F4 on Thursday evening.

Thanks James! I assume keeping the older jets running is orders of magnitude harder than the props, kudos to the hard working guys and gals that dedicate their time to it!
A dusk shoot would be very cool, are you planning on being there?

Yes, I am one of the photographers for the event. I'll be there from Thursday to whenever I can't stand up anymore.
