p.1 #1 · Will Canon be able to keep the RF mount closed?

Interesting article...

https://petapixel.com/2026/09/26/thanks-to-nikon-canons-closed-rf-mount-could-be-forced-open/

Regarding my 2 cents, I think the best thing that can happen for Canon would be for it to open the mount.

There's a whole lot of pontificating in here about an established order of business that's existed for decades, a phenomenon also known as PetaPixel.

The situation described in the article has already played out in the past. Sigma reverse engineered the EF mount, they never got Canon's OK or cooperation.

BrianP - rest assured, Canon does not care what their clients think.

'Mirrorless Specific Share: In dedicated mirrorless market reports (such as Nikkei data), Canon captures roughly 27.4% to over 41% of shipments globally, holding second place or trading leads with Sony (who ranges around 29%–30%).'

So Canon has little incentive to invite other lens makers to offer products in their mount, in AF lenses at least - they seem to be the sticking point.

'The mount is widely open for manual-focus lenses. Brands like Voigtländer, Zeiss, and various manual lens makers freely sell specialized, macro, or tilt-shift manual glass for full-frame RF bodies.'

As far as their market share goes, I read the other day that Canon does very well with female photographers who want something more accessible and easier to deal with, that the Canon cameras are more female-oriented compared with tech-friendly Sony and muscular male-friendly Nikon. No opinion on this, but thought it interesting enough to pass on here.

That is somewhat counterintuitive. Canon and Nikon make full-sized cameras for large hands.
Sony makes small cameras that are too cramped for large hands.

I 100% prefer Sony sized bodies. Non Sense post

I hope they open it up. I still love my EF lenses though so my next Canon purchase will likely be the R6MKIV.
