Been using my Z8 for a while and only yesterday did I start to dabble with pre-release capture. I was shooting the Z 70-200 2.8 S II, and I quickly noticed that the green pre-capture buffering indicator would not stay engaged if I racked the focus / zoom. No pre-release frames were saved if I held the shutter down after the green indicator was gone. Similarly in MF, the pre-release capture indicator would disappear as soon as I rotate the focus ring.
I did some further testing with a 24-70 2.8 S I and the pre-release capture streaming indicator would remain on regardless of camera movement / focus changes / zooming etc. Then I tried the 70-200 II again with VR turned off, and now the green indicator stayed on consistently regardless of movement / zooming etc. Suspecting a compatibility issue with the lens, I tried the same on the 105 2.8 S (with lens VR / synchro VR) and I experienced the same behavior. I did not see this behavior documented anywhere.
Could someone (especially those with a Z8 and a Synchro VR lens, but reports from other owners with Expeed 7 cameras + a VR-enabled lens could be helpful too) try the same and see if your camera shows the same behavior? As in: when VR is enabled in AF-C the green pre-capture buffering indicator goes away with zooming / focus changes and in MF the same happens when you rotate the zoom ring, and the indicator stays on regardless of camera operations as long as the shutter is half-pressed when VR is turned off.
Please also feel free to let me know if this issue has been discussed previously on the internet, or if it is the expected behavior and I was mistaken. Thanks!
