p.1 #1 · Please recommend first M lens for SL system

I am leaning towards SL system - and would greatly appreciate help picking up my first all rounder lens.
I am not into zoom photography yet.
Already own q3-43.

I am looking preferably - Non-leica (as an initial investment)- as I am still in the experimental phase and if I don't succeed I may end up selling everything
Looking at new 35mm F2 Light Lens Labs (which came up often ) but open to anything

My profile -
Not Professional - never really shot Manual
Honestly - I don't know what I like to shoot (yeah...sorry !)
Own - Q3 43
Purpose - to learn to use M lenses

The only non-Leica M lenses I have experienced are Cosina Voigtlander. They are all excellent. One I enjoy on the SLs is the 50mm Nokton F1.1

Here's a great place to start and it won't break the bank. I have this lens and like how compact it is and yet performs really well. Used gear at Cameraquest is great. Lenses are like new.

I am going to suggest a different path than many others may.

A 35mm is probably the most useful first M lens you can buy. It is easy to use, and a very flexible focal length.

I'm sure most responses here will fall back to the traditional "what kind of images you can make" with different lenses. However, I am going to concentrate on your explicitly stated goal of learning to focus with an M lens. With that goal in mind, I would suggest you start with a more challenging lens. In my opinion that would be a fast 50mm. There are choices in very nice 50mm lenses in the f/1.2 to f/1.4 aperture ranges. These will allow you to really learn well how to focus using the features of your camera.

One of my favorites is the Thypoch Simera 50mm f/1.4 because of its aperture blades, beautiful cinematic rendering wide open and excellent sharpness stopped down. However, I don't think this is the correct lens to start learning with due to its unique aperture/distance scale. This would hamper you learn to properly use zone focusing techniques.

Since my in depth personal experiences are limited the very expensive Leica lenses, and the Thypoch I will not make specific recommendations. I suggest you research what is available and post those options that are interesting to you. Then people with expertise using that particular lens can post their opinions on it from a place of real knowledge.

Then you could also buy one of the inexpensive 28mm lenses as a second. These are generally small enough to fit in your pocket, and will give you a wide point of view and the ability to shoot manual as a virtual point and shoot using zone focus techniques. There is no point having a fast aperture for this use case. So, look for an f/2 which are most often less expensive, smaller, and optically better that the faster choices.

Enjoy your M experimentations!

Hmmm ... first one.

Something "satisfying", something that "differentiates", something that "teaches, something that "inspires", something that doesn't "frustrate" (too much, i.e. learning curve).

That last one ... I'd say to be wary of lenses that have a high amount of focus shift. That is something that can be frustrating to a new user. Folks here have a vast knowledge of which lenses are prone to a "little" amount of focus shift (small ain't bad) vs. a LOT (which can be frustrating).

Since you've got the 43 APO ... either a 35 or 50 puts you in similar focal length territory ... IF you are looking to keep a similar focal length. I cut my teeth on a Yashica rangefinder a zillion years ago with a 50/1.4 (iirc), so I've got a sweet spot for something like that. I have the Voigtlander VM 50/1.5 II Vintage in my bag, with a bit of that "retro" aspect to it, which will be something DIFFERENT from the way the 43 APO renders.

That's not to say you "NEED" a faster 50 ... just that it might be a lens that offers a lot of "teaching" capability to learn from. Conversely, something wider (say 28mm) that is slower (i.e. f/2.8 ish) will be "easier" to use because of the difference in FL > DOF range, so it might be more "satisfying". My Elmarit 24/2.8 is very satisfying to use. I can set my aperture / zone focus subject distance to a given point, and it can function very easy to capture things as a moment in time, without the need to even try to refocus.

Convenience of use vs. creativity capability ... those can be different motives as well. So, it's almost like someone asking what should be their first glass of wine ... red, white, rose' ... dry, sweet, semi-sweet, off-dry ... Chambourcin, Norton, Vignole, Cabernet, Chardonnay, etc. The variety of options is pretty exhaustive. So, categorically the plethora of M options is highly varied. And, to a point ... THAT is one aspect of the allure, that is heralded. And yet, you gotta start somewhere for that "FIRST" one.

A 35mm might split the diff between the 50 / 28 paradigm ... just spitballin' the brainstorm at the moment, so this isn't a recommendation per se, just thinking out loud a bit. Just wish I knew more of what you're looking for / expecting ... I mean, the world is your oyster on this one ... so many options abound.

Still pondering ...

Your Q3 43 is razor sharp. Go with something a little different, get a “character lens,” you can get into them fairly (relatively) inexpensive with something from Light Lens Lab. I have a 50mm SPII which has a nice vintage rendering. I also have a Leica 35mm v4 (I’ve owned for almost 40 years) that is really nice also but that one is relatively expensive these days.

There are numerous *really good* reviews on this forum for just about all of the LLL lenses. As a bonus most of the “character lenses” sharpen up and lose all the aberrations once you stop down a bit meaning yo aren’t stuck with the wide open look.
