p.1 #1 · Part 2, First outing with 400-800mm

As the morning progressed, I tried a few more things... I got a little braver with slower subjects and tried some slower shutter speeds, etc with results that surprised me. I think the OSS in the 400-800mm might be a tick better than the 200-600mm stabilization, or, the monopod really helped, probably a little of both. I've read some say they thought the lens was sharper at the long end, but I'm finding this copy pretty consistent throughout the range and it's more about keeping the glass from fogging or heat shimmer down and a steady shot than other factors.

Tried some close ups of these Gulf Fritillaries at 400mm... Getting both in focus while one was in flight was a challenge, I only managed it once, but that is not the lens fault, just nature of the type of shot.

These all look good Eric. The butterfly images show how versatile the lens is.

Thanks Morris - I still haven't decided if it's my go-to botanical lens yet... I like my 70-200mm 2.8 GM II a little better for that work as the focus blinding fast and its brighter, but if I'm out birding, I'm not going to have that other lens in my hip pocket...so... yeah.

Thanks Karl, you were right (again) and it's a beast of a lens. Fortunately, I also got a good copy from a good seller which could have gone either way. It opens up a bit more possibilities without me having to spook a subject to get more of it into the frame, and the carry weight is a non issue by removing my battery grip. The holster case I showed you is working great too! A lot of wins, not to mention the improved A/F.

Since I cross posted this particular thread as a semi review of the lens, I should post a link to the case I am referring to:

"ZZQ&CCF Camera Lens Pouch Case for Sony FE 400-800mm f/6.3-8 G OSS Super-Telephoto Zoom Lens"

The lens fits with the A7RV body attached and room to spare. It feels sturdy enough without being too rigid (I was afraid it might be a mushy soft sided bag), and I wear it cross body without pain.
