p.1 #1 · Butterflies..

My yard is filled with butterflies this summer. It has been very hot and extremely humid to date! The "Red Admiral" , while native to Maryland, I never had seen in my yard until this summer. Not pictured here yet...

These are from years ago at a "Flights of Fancy" show.
Dan

PS..These are only partially edited in Ps..I was complying an "index" for a Butterfly Index for a Maryland County, Montgomery..Brookside Conservatory.

It appears that you may have stumbled upon some sort of "tribal dance" being performed by the Apricot Sulpher couple.
Nice work all around Dan.

A nice short series in your post on butterflies. Here in Ontario I am privileged to have the Prof Urquhart Butterfly Garden about 45 minutes away from my house. A volunteer organization looking after a beautiful patch of donated land with several hundred flower pads attracting numerous wildlife species like a variety of butterflies, many species of birds, insects, etc.

That is wonderful Joachim!
My local conservatory has a "Flights of Fancy" program that started 20 years ago. When covid hit the shut it down.

After covid I volunteered to be a docent if they re-started the exhibit. They said no.

But 2 years ago re-started it as a "visitor" only exhibit versus a photographer's only morning even.
Love butterflies!

Dan, the Urquhart Butterfly Garden is not a Conservatory but a regular open air garden with many flower beds, well maintained by volunteers and City of Dundas gardening personnel. Spenser Creek runs into the Desjardin canal adjacent to the garden. All kind of wildlife like blue-, green-, night- heron, ducks and cormorants and the smaller song birds like vrens, oriols, warblers, etc., like to hang around. Also several pairs of kingfishers.
It used to be an industrial area in the late 19th, early 20th century. The Garden is named in honour of Prof Urquhart (U. of Toronto) who, with his wife, dedicated his life to the discovery of the migration routes of the Monarch butterfly.
