I just want a new Coolpix A, just go full Fuji X100 and hit me with a great fixed lens that uses the Nikon Picture Controls.
Or an Expeed 7 ZFCII please.
insert the *do something* gif here...I am waiting patiently still for any of these things as well. I love Nikon and I do really think Nikon is onto something with their picture controls and the expeed 7 processor. The Zf is just insane but it's a bit too much to carry sometimes when I am juggling our kids at the same time. I am holding off buying something smaller like the XE5, x100, rx100, etc for example in hopes Nikon will come out with something small to compete in that space.
Nikon comes out with a digital S3 in retro design, FX sensor, 24 Mpix with a new Nikon S mount with digital contacts. The new S mount lenses would have a longer flange distance in order to keep the lenses smaller.
Personally, I would buy this over any DL body and fixed lens combo Nikon comes out with.

How about this as a concept and would you buy it?

If Nikon took the digital rangefinder fight to Leica and undercut them on price I'd be all for it. I don't see it happening, though.

Insanely niche. All they need to do is making a rangefinder-STYLED Zf and release it with both the 24 and 45 non stacked sensors and have their own A7C line.
Make a few good pancakes along the lines of the 26/2.8 for it. Don't skimp on the EVF. Expeed 7 bin part camera they will never be able to keep in stock.
If they wanted to do what you suggest, they could simply make an M mount camera and adjust the sensor glass accordingly. No need to reinvent the wheel. In fact, "native" support of M lenses would make Nikon THE camera to shoot M on, IMO. Enable Non-Cpu settings to allow for focus confirmation...the mind runs wild.
I would stand in line, in the rain, for a de-Cool-pix-ed Coolpix A, with true Manual Focus, that does not "forget" the set Distance, when the camera goes to sleep! That forgetfulness "feature" has annoyed me, to no end. Plus, please, a full-function flash shoe. APS-C, of course, just like the original A.
By "de-Cool-pix-ed," I mean to name it something other than "Coolpix." I wonder whether the original Nikon A may have been better-received, had it been marketed without having been labeled "Coolpix."

Embrace the cringe! I think it should be called Coolpix. The only other name I would accept for this camera is Nikon Pikaichi but then it kinda needs a 35mm lens✌️
