Capture One is clearly excellent software but under its current owners has painted itself into a corner, dropping cheaper single brand versions, making the same “no subscription “ claims as Adobe then doing everything they can to weasel out of it while not supporting one of the main MF brands who were a competitor to their former owner as they retreat to a pros only niche. I hope the new owners see sense and make it more mainstream again as they’re going to need increased revenue to stay competitive. I want to see it succeed, clearly the current owners can’t find a way so good luck to the new owners.

Too late for me since I moved on from C1 when they raised my yearly rate too high for my liking.

Now for all cameras (X2D2 included) I use and like Bridge/ACR/PS (when needed) and liking the folders where all images are now located side by side on my external drives-RAW/Tiff/or PSD/Jpeg.

As a longterm C1 user, I have to say the underinvestment in the software is getting increasingly obvious. Current private equity owner has cut cost, practically killed the perpetual license model and is now looking to sell C1.. I don't think the end result will look good for users.

I still prefer it over Lightroom because of its core RAW engine and some of the tools, but C1 doesn't feel like polished software anymore and is taking forever to catch up with some useful tools available in LR (e.g. ML-based denoise, which I think is now

Due to my love/hate relationship with Adobe, I was hoping C1 could pull me away, but I felt like I either had to pay for two subscriptions or choose, and PS is still too compelling, even as a simple user of it. If C1 wanted to, they could employ two or three dedicated teams to develop the software, one of which would focus on feature development based on user input. But like you said, and is always the case, investment groups, by definition, only seek a max return, and when they milk it dry, it's sold off.

Capture One are adding features, just ones mostly aimed at studio/fashion photographers.

Most of us here at FM seem to be wildlife/landscape/travel types. We recently got AI noise reduction, which I wouldn’t have thought was high on the wishlist for the studio crowd. It does work well. On the other hand, some of what they’ve done for us seems half-baked to me. For example, it can show a single image on a map using embedded GPS, but not a batch of images on the map with thumbnails. It can correct the time on a batch by a fixed offset but it corrects only one of the two dates most cameras store.

I’m sticking with them because I like the results and I had bad experiences with both Adobe and DxO. Ultimately, the problem is the major camera makers, who instead of using a public, self-describing raw format (which Adobe designed, published and shepherded through ISO), each use their own undocumented moving target. This raises costs for existing players like Capture One and the barrier to entry for new players, hence the high prices and so-so quality.

Absolutely right about the DNG format, given how awful to use camera makers raw converters are I’ve no idea why the manufacturers make third parties reverse engineer their files.

The larger players like Nikon, Sony, Canon ,etc. want to use their own (lossy) compression options to get higher throughput on modern MILC. I doubt that will change so the software makers have to build that into their process.

Feels very tempting. I used to like Capture One a lot, I still have my perpetual licenses for CO 6 and CO 10 (with free upgrade to 11) but the price increase already back then was too much for me that drove me away from their product. They kind of force people to upgrade if you happen to get new gear. Same goes for Iridient Developer.

I'm in a similar "one-time purchase" trap with Iridient currently. After my first "one-time" purchase, I have already made second "one-time" purchase, and my free upgrades period happened to just expire like a week before new major version upgrade was released. I'm not making the third "one-time" purchase this time, at least not right now. I can perfectly cope with the current version.

Just a bit of background; I was a long time Lightroom user but when they dropped off the perpetual licenses and went subscription model only, forced to have Adobe Cloud installed and such, I started to look away. Well, the grass isn't necessarily greener on the other side of the fence. I still wish to get the same library management + culling + editing experience as Lightroom offers. Now I use mixture of Phocus, Iridient and Photomator. XnView for folders and culling.

I don't want AI stuff, cloud stuff, subscriptions or some fancy tethering features. I don't need complex layers and Photoshop-like editing features. That's why I have used Iridient for four years now. For batch editing and quick auto-adjustments I use Photomator.

Maybe I'll give a try for Capture One. Black Friday is every year and there's a slight chance that there's a BF discount for perpetual license too..

A point that bears repeating: you will lose access to HNCS by editing your Hassy RAWs in C1, no different than LR, no matter what "profiles" they have provided for you.

Hasselblad has such an opportunity to embrace the pro market if they want it. They just seem more interested in handing out cameras to random YouTubers with a 1000 followers.

I would really love to ditch Adobe, but Capture One's pricing blows too and offers less if you need to take your files further! Agh!

I’ve reached the conclusion that I want an iPad Pro exclusively for editing Hassy files, which is the least economical solution of all of these!

I gave C1 up because of their dreadfully bad support. What support? More like listening to chirping crickets. And as the rest of you note, their cost was excessive. I wasn’t thrilled at the thought of going back to Adobe, but I think Adobe has greatly improved upon the things that caused me to try others in the first place. None of them are perfect, that is for sure, these days I’m mostly satisfied between LRC & PS.

My experience:

I used the specified method (at that time a forum) to request support for two of the Zeiss ZE Classic lenses, which would have consisted of a simple change to use the existing profiles for the optically identical Milvus lenses. I quoted reputable sources (major reviewers stating Zeiss had told them it was so). My thread was moved to a graveyard subforum where I found several other requests by users for lens support alongside mine.

When challenged by one of those other users, Capture One said they had limited resources and used telemetry to decide what the popular lenses are. I don’t know how their telemetry could tell I wanted to buy an unsupported lens but didn’t because my raw software didn’t support it.

Later, I ran across a page on Zeiss’s web site stating those two Milvus lenses were optically identical to the Classics. If, somehow, they couldn’t have managed a phone call to Germany, that would be a primary source. The forum is no longer; I would have to register and enter the whole request all over again using the new method. I can’t be bothered.

In a recent interview on DPReview the CEO of C1 proudly states that they are committed to yearly price increases. I get it, for companies like mine this is a small write off expense, cost of doing business and it's them or the tax man. However the focus from the interview still seems to be 'we're marketing to people who can afford us', not sure it's the right tone for C1 since they went for the mainstream market, especially when most already have a PS/LR subscription. The interview seems to point to their 'head' either still being in the old model or that they are trying to return there.

With PhaseOne and CaptureOne being completely separate legal and business entities, it's not really that big a surprise that CaptureOne would want to seek to grow their business by enabling Hasselblad photographers to use their software.

X2dII sends crop data into Capture One and images appear in there with the crop mask already applied. This is the first camera I have that does that. I am switching camera to square and never touch this setting again.

Make sure to set your camera’s outside-of-crop area to semi-transparent so you can see things just outside the frame as you compose. This is one of those killer features I wish more cameras had.

I installed Capture One 11 and played a while with it. Just remembered what I fell in love with years ago. For me, the user interface is intuitive. Color adjustments for skin tones are great. Exported JPGs have lots of fine detail - I remember this was the main reason I ultimately switched away from Lightroom. Unfortunately, version 11 is so old it doesn't support any of the cameras I currently own.

I was so curious about the Hasselblad support in the newest version that and found a small discount for the latest version from a local store that I decided to purchase it.

My first impression is that CO Pro (16.8) handles Hasselblad files fine but the default profile has strong contrast and slightly warmer tones than Phocus. Choosing manually Extra Shadow curve-profile matches the contrast level pretty much to Phocus. Color profile is much harder to match. Sometimes a slight adjustment on WB kelvin or tint is enough, sometimes needs Color Balance fiddling.

Only Phocus can represent the HNCS colors out-of-the-box. This is something I knew and accepted prior to purchase. Though, Capture One colors can be pleasing and for many cases they are very close to Phocus. I haven't touched any of the files from Ricoh GR, Leica or Canon 5D4 yet. I'm waiting for great results for these too.

CO can dig lots of fine details out the files. This is promising. I haven't tested the de-noise yet. Phocus HNNR is great but very slow.

I still don't like the library but the culling feature is new to me. Looks promising.
