Piping plovers are a federally threatened shorebird, but thanks to decades of dedicated conservation efforts, Maine has become a success story. Through protected nesting areas, volunteer monitors, responsible beach management, and public cooperation, the state's breeding population has grown significantly.
I am obsessed with how cute the babies are. I laid down in the sand to get these shots. It was worth every grain of sand to capture these beautiful little birds.

Great shots! Good to see them expanding northward.
One thing not mentioned here: these chicks are very small, and they are really hard to see, they blend in to the sand so well. Smaller even, than a Ruffed grouse chick!
