If one is interested in a film RF experience, there's a huge world of options outside of Leica-branded stuff. Some have compatibility with M mount, many more with LTM, and then there's Contax mount (with some Nikon S compatibilty). Beyond that, there are fixed-lens RF cameras (popular in the 1970s). One of my favorites in this category is the latter-era Contax T with optical RF and fixed 38/2.8 Sonnar. And, yes, I do own Leica film gear for the, ah, cachet.

I'll say get whatever you can to start...if it's an older M9 or M240 and a Thypoch, 7artisians, TTArtisan or Brightin Star etc get that, or if you can afford a M11P and Summilux or Noctilux, go for it! Or go for something in between, to me the classic starter Leica setup is an M body with a 35mm or 50mm Summicron or Summilux.

It's a combination of things but ultimately it's body first, the shooting experience is why I'm now a leica enthusiast, it of course very much helps that they look sexy, feel nice, and the romanticism of their history and lenses. Ultimately though I'm here for the close as analog as I can get experience while challenging myself. That nostalgia and romanticism does influence my lens choice too which leads to more Leica glass but now with all these homage lenses I can semi avoid spending a lot of money on leica lens. I say semi avoid because I have been wondering about that 50 lux asph v1 for a while lol.

I am all set with the lenses from 21mm to 135mm all Leica mostly Leitz. I don’t even look at new glass anymore. The M2, M11M and SL2 will be enough for some years to come. I have used third party M and screw mount bodies but none were satisfying like a Barnack or any M. When I shot R lenses I really enjoyed them on the Nikon D750 when converted with Leitax mount and I won’t buy another SL body after this one.

Wow that's so nice of you to say! That was a LONG time ago. The 19R v2 was a great lens at the time, I must say the 35/2, 90/2AA and 28/2.8 were also really good... hmm.

But the magical shots you had with the R 19/2.8 still make my jaw drop!

I get my Leicas with the lens permanently attached to the body (Q2M and Q3).
That's a valid and good subjective decision - for me, it was the instant exclusion criteria to go with a Q-series camera. I always want a camera with exchangeable lens mount. The EVF-M would be perfect for my needs/preferences instead. Just its price is not what I am even closely willing to vest.

I love my non-Leica lenses and would be very pleased is there were more non-Leica body options to compete in the digital space. I'd love a modern upgrade on the Epson RD-1. Something about having a camera that has the name that most people associate with a horrible office printer on a nice piece of equipment speaks to me more than a luxury brand name like Leica.
