p.1 #1 · HDR Travel and Distribution

I’ve been playing with HDR for awhile now and must say that it has much the same draw as projected slides, but with much greater dynamic range. I’ve been updating both of my NAS and have combined the two projects.

Regarding NAS: I’ve gone with a Ugreen NAS combined with a static IP NordVPN with NordMesh active. What this means that my NAS can always be found at a set IP address. Every member of my family has NordVPN and NordMesh installed on their iPhones, iPads and MacBook Pro computers. What this has allowed me to do is provide automatic backup of their device images to the NAS. Like other NAS brands, Ugreen has a photo app that appears the same as the phone photo app, but also has powerful AI capabilities, such as organizing photos by location, subject matter, or capture device. Each family members photos are private, backed up to the NAS, but can be shared.

HDR: The Hasselblad X2Dii has a 1400nit LCD screen with very good colors. When shooting you can specify that images be stored in RAW, JPEG, HEIC and HDR versions of JPEG and HEIC. The Hasselblad mobile app is similar to other manufacturers apps, but perhaps a bit more sophisticated. When on vacation I can shoot RAW + HDR HEIC and download HEIC of interest to the Phocus App. From there I can export all photos to the Ugreen NAS Photo Storage on the NAS and can extend automatically segregate my images by camera. What makes this quite convenient is that I can send anyone a link to my HDR HEIC images and they can be displayed in full HDR, or if needed you can use HDR compliant JPEG. So, as I vacation, I save my RAW files locally, but every night, while I have WiFi access, the HDR images are automatically download to my server.

Additionally, I’m able to reach every file on my NAS and am able to administer the NAS remotely.

I must say that my interest in HDR was initiated with the inclusion of HDR on the X2Dii. Prior to that, I never saved camera JPEG, or HEIC files. Of course, everyone can produce HDR files directly from desktop photo software, but you will find few places to display the images. A couple of social media sites accept HDR JPEG, Google Photos accepts HDR JPEG and a few other photo services. At this point, as far as I know, Flickr does not support HDR. Most modern devices have high output screens and support the display of HDR images, but so far, few are demanding such services. It has taken me some time to move away from my images edited to provide good prints, when 99% of what I do is view the images on a screen..a bit crazy.
