p.1 #1 · Assigning exposure compensation to the M-FN button on the Canon R8
I have made a number of custom assignments to the buttons on this new camera but I can't seem to find an exposure compensation choice for the M-FN button. If it would work on one of the other buttons that would also work for me but I would rather have it on the M-FN button.

Not sure if the below works, but I like your idea and I'm going to try it out when I get home.
Follow these steps to configure your camera:Press the Menu button.Go to the Yellow (Setup) or Orange (Shooting) menu, select Customize Buttons (Custom Controls).Scroll down and select the M-Fn button.Set the function to Dial Func (Dial Function). With Dial Func highlighted, press the INFO button to open the detailed settings.Ensure a checkmark is placed next to Exposure Compensation. Uncheck any other functions you don't use often.Press OK to save.Once assigned, press the M-Fn button to make Exposure Compensation the active dial function, then turn the main dial to adjust your exposure.

Canon does not always permit arbitrary function assignment, unfortunately.
For what it's worth, on the R8 I use the Set button (press and hold) + Main dial for this. It's convenient and easy to manage with your eye at the viewfinder.
This works great for me because this also is the setup I have programmed into all my bodies for exposure comp in Manual mode going back to my DSLR days. So, the muscle memory is there.
Many people probably use the lens Control ring for this, but I prefer keeping exposure compensation on the Quick Control Dial on my other bodies.
For a long time, I felt I had no use for the Control ring. However, I recently programmed it to temporarily override ISO speed (from Auto to some specific value) in order to achieve a slower shutter speed (and hence lower ISO and higher IQ). I have found this to be convenient when using stabilized lenses for static subjects where I can hand-hold at lower speeds. After the metering timer runs out, it resets to Auto again, so I don't have to worry as much about subject movement for the next situation.

What I am seeing now is that in Av and Tv the top dial changes the aperture or shutter speed and the side dial shifts the EC so I guess I can just use that method since these are the modes I use most of the time.
