River banks in my local park are very wild and overgrown, with dead trees left where they fall. The mess bracketed the little clear oasis in the middle, helping create a page out of a "once upon a time" storybook.
I came by this dim moody lighting honestly - it was well after sunset, and it took both cooperation of the subjects and the right technology and techniques to produce a usable image. Slower shutter speed helped smooth the placid river further.

Lovely picture, and I love the writing of your post. The two subjects are positioned well.

Thank you! The male of the pair tried to send me packing with a few pointed honks. When that didn't work, I guess he decided posing was the fastest way to get me out of his (hair) feathers.

Your mission now, Malka, is to continue the story! An idyllic scene.

Thank you Douglas. My favorite pictures - mine or otherwise - are those with a story, even a small one, but still another layer beneath the visual.
Here is another one, from the same park, from one of my visits back in December. It was misting but I went in anyway, with my camera bag and a really big umbrella. When the real rain came, I took the opportunity to experiment with capturing droplets hitting surface of the main creak, with spreading circles. I snapped this one at a break-away stream as an after-thought. This is the only picture that made the cut - must've needed the non-water elements to bring out the rain ripples. I went back to the same rivulet a few times since then, but haven't been able to get anything as nice.
